The smell of a diesel engine, particularly a tractor. The smell of the red dirt up at my family’s farm. My ex’s skin. That still hurts. The air before a summer thunderstorm. ---

Vanilla perfume creates a short-circuit in my brain. On several occasions I have followed women wearing this scent for ten minutes as they traipse through a mall. Thanks for the aromous ecstasy, girls. ---

Hot cinnamon rolls, right after you put the icing on. Rain falling on my tin roof. (It smells weird, but good.) Saltwater My boyfriend, right after a shower, putting on cologne. Any men’s shaving cream Aqua Velva. (Don’t laugh! :)) Reminds me of my dad Hot coffee with a shot of Godiva chocolate in it My baby niece’s hair Colours of Bennetton cologne, on anybody A well-drawn pint of Guinness ---

I also like the smell of diesel fuel at harbors, and the smell of jet fuel as I drive around the end of the runway going to/from work. And the smell of trees in the forest when it starts to rain - birch, cottonwood, alder and white spruce - along with the damp earth. I’m pretty aware of my sense of smell since more often than not, it doesn’t seem to work at all. I’ve got some pretty screwed up sinuses. ---

I was in high school, and there was a scented insert in my New York magazine when it arrived in the mail on month. This was probably late '86, early '87. I’ve been a junkie for it since the first sniff and have been enthralled beyond reason whenever a woman wore it. ---

Rain Leather The woods Incense-especially rain and Dragon’s Blood Irish Spring soap Old books Leather Towels just out of the dryer The three perfumes I wear-Rapture, Aliage and Allure (plus, I just like the idea of being able to buy allure in a bottle) Baby powder Something sweet I can’t identify, that I sometimes smell outside in the mornings. It reminds me a sweet perfume my aunt wears, and it makes me think of the trip to Britain I took with her and her family a few years ago. ---
