**Adding a new smiley** We will be adding a new smiley at the SDMB. The smiley will be chosen by popular vote, using the approval method of voting (you can vote for more than one candidate, the candidate with the most votes will win - see [at this page](http://www.sciam.com/askexpert/math/math2.html) a description of approval voting by mathematician Sam Merrill.) **The polling process** We have 50 candidates. vBulletin limits the number of choices in a poll to 10. So the first round of voting will have 5 polls with 10 candidates each. You can vote for more than one candidate in each of the 5 polls in the first round. (Note that if you vote for _every_ candidate, the effect for determining the winner would be the same as if you had not voted at all.) This first round will last 7 days. At end of 7 days, there will be a second-round poll with a) the winner in each of the five polls of the first round (five smilies) b) plus the top four vote-getters besides those five, treating all the polls as one c) and the “no new smilies” choice The second-round 10-choice poll that will also expire in 7 days and be conducted using approval voting. If the winner of the second round is a category with two or more smilies (e.g. dubious has two submissions), there will be one final poll to choose the best smiley for that category, with an expiration date of five days. If there are ties in any of the rounds of voting, the winner will be decided by Arnold Winkelried flipping a swiss coin (to have a double guarantee of swiss neutrality) to determine the winner. **Candidates** [List of candidates](http://home.earthlink.net/~awinkelried/smpoll1/). This heat may have the three strongest candidates. Dubious, Foil, and Highjack all have obvious uses and would all contribute to the SDMB. I voted for all three, this time, but I’m partial to Tinfoil Hat. ---

IMO dubious is the _only_ one of the 50 that actually has a useful place on the SDMB. And I’m even dubious about that one. Tinfoil is pure insult and will no doubt lead to very tedious pile-ons in which people think it’s oh-so-funny just to post 50 of them. Hijack could, I suppose, be useful to indicate a hijack - but only if you know that’s what the symbol means. Just as long as we don’t end up with that bloody stupid smash thing in poll whatsit. pan ---

And the Wally is what - underused? If it wasn’t for the fact that it’s _Wally_ we’re talking about, I’d be calling for the removal of that monstrosity too. But you have given me a valid use for “foil”. Though I still think it’ll just be used for pit threads - “Lok hwo stupid **MadBastard** he dosene’t even no propre logic :foil:” “Yeah, what a idoit :foil” “:foil: :foil: :foil:” Go read something like the Darwin Awards Forum some time and see what happens when you provide morons with unfettered access to pretty pictures that give insta-flames. I have the same problem but even _worse_ with Smashie. pan ---

I think (after the newness wears off) it’ll end up being something akin to the IANAL phrase, meaning “I do not subscribe to this idea. Though I am presenting it straightforwardly, I hold it in contempt.” Fenris ---
