the smell is horrible. it is expensive. it leaves butts and ashes to get everywhere. why do people do it? effin nicotine. if i am in proximity to a smoker for more than half a minute, it gets on my clothes. it turns walls of houses yellow. bad breath, need for lighter/matches. its a waste. OG how i loathe seeing ashtrays full of white stubs and grey powder. the udder burden to society it is. everyime i am driving and see someone with a cigarrete, it drives me nuts, knowing that the car interior now smells like ass, and there are quite possibly burn marks in the upholstry. this might sound like “blah blah blah ‘i’m a little bitch’ blah blah blah”. but i just hate everything about lighting something that has an offensive odor, and then putting it in your face! dont make me tell you traumatic childhood stories… ---

I respect your opinion but I am afraid that you are one of the only people that feels this way. Smokers enjoy an exhalted status in our culture because it is just plain cool and for greatfulness from others for paying for all those taxes that let others enjoy special programs. You list some drawbacks to smoking but I will have to remind you that the research still isn’t conclusive on smoking causing an interior “ass” smell. Likewise, those yellow walls may have just been painted that way. You don’t have to worship smokers like the masses do but realize that being a one-person false alarm will bring you nothing but ridicule and heartache is this life. ---

A new renter just moved into the unit next to me (I live in a townhouse, and they are duplex style, so my neighbor’s door is just next to mine) – and she always hangs out in front of her door smoking. I often hold my breath to enter my house now. If people want to stink up their **own** cars, fine. More power to them. But I’m especially irritated when I try to get a “Non-smoking room” at a hotel, and enter it to the distinct smell of old absorbed smoke and the lame attempt to cover it up with loads of sickly smelling “air freshener”. ---

I’m a non-smoker, but I’m actually pretty tolerant. Most of my friends smoke around me, and I don’t give them any grief. One thing I do have a beef with, is **when they** **light up in the car and then crack their window**. Oh, OK, you want to smoke, but you don’t want the smoke in your face. I see. Where do you think it’s going now, hmm? Do you truly think it’s getting sucked out the window, despite contradictory evidence of in-rushing air? How can you not notice that you’ve created a situation where the smoke from **your** cigarette is now being narrowly channelled into **my** face? And I’m ranting here because every smoker I know is so defensive that no matter how nicely I explained the problem they would still be offended! The best solution I’ve come up with so far is mirroring. They crack their window, I crack my window the same amount. They put their’s up, mine goes up. It’s cold work, but I think I saw a light go on in my one friend’s head the other day! ---

Is it like the time when you were little and innocently playing ball too close to the road, and you ran out in front of a car, and it stopped in plenty of time, but then you looked and saw that the driver courteously waved you on but he had a cigarette and you just _knew_ that his upholstery smelled like smoke and probably had… _ohgodohgodohgod_… ash on it? Or is it more like at that family gathering, when your skeevy uncle lured you alone into the basement, locked the door, and then he showed you his ashtray? Or were you on lover’s lane, and a report came on the radio about how it was 2 AM and the local bar had shut down and all the smokers were out wandering the streets, and your girlfriend got all creeped out and made you drive away as fast as you could? And when you got home… there… on the door handle… was a _lighter!_ ---

mainly the reason for this rant is because my parents smoke. move out, you say? i’m 17, no job, small town. smoke always seems to waft toward me, and when i leave the room, my parents get mad at me for not coming in and speaking to them. traumatic childhood story: one night, my mother had come to tuck me into bed(i was about 7) and i had a can of dr. pepper on the floor next to the foot of my bed. so my mom leaves, and i am thinkin, “hey, dont i still have some dr. pepper in that can? i do!” so i drink it, and to my horror, she had extinguished her cigarrette in there. didnt tell me. i would rather have drank ignited kerosene. this stuff HURT my throat. and to top it off, the second i came down, my parents were in their room asleep, door locked( well, we had 2 doors to their room, one always stayed locked, because…well i dont know why, and that was the door i was closest to.) i start banging on the door, hoarsely yelling what happened, and all i hear is my mom sayin “youll be fine, go back to bed”. ---
