I’m almost starting to feel sorry for them. Romney insults the UK on a friendship tour to Europe to show what a statesmen he is and the Brits pull off an incident-free Olympics just to rub it in. There was the whole tax return debacle, then as they expect a bounce from naming their VP, Todd Akin does his best to take the focus off the economy and back onto the GOPs ultra-conservative social agenda. Now they have to cancel a day of the convention due to the hurricane which will further remind voters of how badly Bush handled Katrina. Having a series of shootings doesn’t help them use gun control fears to rally the base and the searing heat and resultant drought in the heartland makes global warming a touchy subject as well.

Yes, if only real-world events would stop reminding people of their horrible policies, things would finally be going their way.

Cursed reality and its liberal bias!

The Akin mess is symptomatic of a bigger problem – the GOP can’t resist bending over backwards to accommodate its crackpot fringe. Romney’s Birther “joke” makes sense in that context: he feels that he just has to throw bones to the peanut gallery, but is trying to figure out how to do so without utterly losing the middle of the electorate.

And on Romney’s big night, the crowning event of the convention, the night of his acceptance speech, what’s the headline-grabber and Twitter sensation?

A rambling, incoherent, off-color-by-allusion talk by an elderly Hollywood icon addressing an empty chair.

The whole thing was a depressing farce.

I don’t feel sorry for them, but yes, they’ve had a bunch of distractions and screwups that interfered with their messages and the stuff they want to focus on.
