Damn. I was watching the show, but I usually turn it off when the musical guests come on, so I missed it. Seems like SNL used to always have live music. You could tell because bands would frequently be out of tune or the singers would have problems with their voice.

The _dress rehearsal_ for SNL, is taped earlier, before an audience, on Saturday evening. The tape from that dress rehearsal is cued up during the subsequent live over the air performance so that if something disastrous would happen during the live show, the broadcast could switch over to the dress rehearsal tape.

The same thing was done for the live broadcast of _E.R._ a few years ago — a taped version was cued up in case something went wrong with the live broadcast.

HAHAHAHA! That was great. The bassist and the guitarist were looking at each other with expressions of I-don’t-think-this-is-supposed-to-be-happening on their faces.

I like seeing fuck-ups in the show. Gives it some unexpectedness. I was disappointed to read – I think it was on the Dope, actually – that the show regularly substitutes the dress rehearsal version of sketches for the “actual” version if the “actual” version didn’t turn out so well, so it’s good to see that they don’t remove all the blemishes.

This version of her ‘apology’ (“my band started playing the wrong song and I didn’t know what to do”… yeah, that’s why your voice was coming in over the PA before you started singing) worked for me and the other one didn’t, so I thought I’d post it in case anyone else has the same problem.

If you think THAT’S funny, MTV just did a big article on Ashlee Simpson’s “rehearsal” for SNL.

What, exactly, does a lip-synching, non-dancing “artist” need to rehearse? Lip-glossing?

I wonder if the producers think this is funny, or if someone’s head is rolling now because of it. And I wonder if ol’ Ashlee’s crazy dad is going to try to sue Lorne Michaels over the screw up, or what her manager thinks about it 'cause she really didn’t handle it well.

I see the humor of the situation, but the empathetic embarassment I feel for Ashlee makes me glad I didn’t actually see it. I **hate** being embarassed.

C’mon, you guys, she’s just a kid.

And besides, maybe SNL production staff or her own publicist told her it would look better if she blamed her band than if she blamed the show that was hosting her. After all, the band works for her and they’re probably lucky to have the gig. I would think it was decided, perhaps even with the band’s approval, that it would be better for all if she just blamed the band.

(However, if one weren’t trying to cover up the fact that one is lip-synching, it would seem to make more sense for her to have just sung the song the band was playing.)

But still, like I said, she’s just a kid…and she doesn’t have much performing experience under her belt either. I’m in favor of cutting her some slack here.

Eh, screw-ups come with the gig. I say make them live up to them! Besides, It’s netting her free-advertising, I had almost completley forgotten about her until this hilarious event. I hope she screw up more often!

**Starving Artist** : You make it seem like Ashlee Simpson should get over this mistake and continue to make\* music.

\*(well she doesn’t make it herself you know)

Are you nuts? Maybe this will scare more pop sensations to quit and go into hiding before starting to reign terror on the real music lovers, and leave music creation to hard working bands and artists.

By the way, she is not lucky to have a gig, she is lucky to have a older sister to pave the way for her and technology to make her sound like she has a voice AND a big record company to buy her a band.

I’m all for cutting Ashlee Simpson a break. I think she’s a smart kid with a level head.

However, I’m all for NOT cutting SNL a break on allowing a lipsynching artist on the show. The show is called SATURDAY NIGHT, LIVE. All performances, including the actors, actresses, and musical guests should be live ones.

This canned music shit has got to go. If artists insist on performing that way, then there’s the door. You can’t tell me they couldn’t find another musical guest that would break down Lorne Michaels’s door to fill that slot.

I put the blame squarely on SNL for not instituting a “live music only” policy.

Possibly. 😉

Hey, there’s enough room for all types of music and all types of performers. I had a conversation similar to this some years ago regarding Madonna. Somebody was ragging on her because her music was superficial and my position was (and still is) that there’s obviously a market for it, and therefore people who are enjoying it, so who’s to say she shouldn’t be making it just because it doesn’t live up to the critic’s idea of “real music?” There are people – mostly kids, I imagine – who really like Ashlee Simpson and want to listen to her. That is all the justification that’s needed in my opinion.

Well, first of all I didn’t say _she_ was lucky to have the gig, I said her band was. And they are, regardless of how they got the gig. And yes, she may be lucky like you say, but how many other sisters or brothers of recording artists are able to parlay their looks, talent, and drive into a career like hers? Not many. And the reason is that like with almost all performers, there is something about her looks and sound and personality that resonates with her fans, and that is the greatest luck of all, but it’s the kind of luck one has to have in order to be a star.

Milli Vanilli got a lot of free advertising too. The idea that “all publicity is good publicity” is almost true, but there are exceptions.

Kid or adult, she’s getting paid a lot of money to be a music performer. Getting paid means that you’re supposed to be a professional. When a professionals have a tech screw-up they roll with it. All she needed to do was give a visual cue to the sound folks to turn her mic up- then sing the freaking song!

This kind of thing is a little more frustrating when you actually know extremely talented musicians who cut their teeth by constantly playing live gigs, and who earn their stripes through hard work, and don’t make a fraction of the money that these manufactered pop stars make. From the looks on the faces of the hired musicians in her band, it looked like they actually got a kick out of it.

I see no problem with laughing at this silly little girl. When an emperor goes walking around without any clothes, sooner or later someone’s going to notice.

Ha! Ha! Ha!
