I have a suspicion that you don’t have that great a sense of humour. That’s ok. Takes all types.
Eta: to clarify, if you think I find child molestation amusing because I laughed at those jokes, you have a disconnect with what humour and human laughter are about. Your level 11 empathy notwithstanding.
on the contrary. i wanted to start a web page at one point dedicated to comedians like george carlin and bill hicks. both controversial, but i doubt wither one would make jokes about child molesters. doug stanhope might. he (stanhope) has a lot of material find offensive.
ok, so, you would find it funny if i made jokes about a chemotherapy patient wasting away and using the bathroom in their own pants? whats funny about that? i’m childish because i wouldnt find that funny?
You can find any jokes funny or not and I wouldn’t say a thing. But what I’m talking about is that you don’t understand that other people can find jokes about a subject funny without necessarily thinking the subject matter is funny. That’s what makes your understanding incredibly unsophisticated. Sorry.
I have personally suffered a tragic, traumatic experience, although not specifically, directly, either of those topics. I also have had experiences in dealing with child molesters (I was lucky to avoid victimization), and have loved ones who were unable to avoid victimization.
Humor has been an important resource for survival and recovery.
During those times when emotions are raw, I find it quite effective to change the channel or turn the TV off. And sometimes when I feel like I need to connect with someone who understands the absurdity of horror, I seek out comedians who do dark humor well.
Louie’s bit last night was, for me, a joy. I’ve spent more than enough time suffering and despairing. I’m grateful that there are comedians like Louie who can create humor around such difficult subjects, who can create joy.
I remember reading (here maybe) that nearly all comedy makes fun of someone. That’s sort of how it works. We laugh at someone else’s suffering. Even ‘family comedy’ Jim Gaffigan’s Hot Pockets routine works in several white trash jokes. Even leaving out the white trash part, the entire joke is predicated an everyone from the people that make it to the people that buy it being stupid.
Robert, you wouldn’t find that funny and the way you stated it, it certainly doesn’t sound funny, but the right comedian can make it funny to people that don’t have a family member in the situation and, frankly, everything is going to insult someone, especially in the day and age of twitter. If comedians didn’t make fun of things that offended people, we probably wouldn’t have much, if any, comedy. Post some comedy clips you like and I’ll bet we can find a group that they offend.
Yes. I would be a much better person if I had managed to stifle my laughter and quickly made “tut tut” noises. Bravo for you that it happens naturally.
Ok, look, of all the topics I’ve objected too in SDMB, this is probably one of the most benign. But I still think there is a line to cross of what goes too far in joking about unfortunate situations.
