As a kid, I was a very picky eater; I’m not a whole lot better as an adult.

But, the one fussiness that my parents still talk about, and which fits this thread, is that, up until about age 7 or 8, I refused to eat hamburgers, despite the fact that I absolutely loved steak.

We were eating at a restaurant in the Caribbean. A family arrived with three adults and a horde of 3-10 year olds. _For a photo op_, one of the adults specifically ordered lobsters, one per person. That was three adults and seven kids.

We enjoyed our meal while watching servers presenting the 10 lobsters and then the servers taking pictures for the adults. They poked around at their meals, then left before we’d ordered our after dinner drinks.

SAME with me. I liked the good stuff from an early age , I was endlessly mocked. The very highest virtue a person could possess, according to my mother, was being ‘down to earth’. A peasant, someone ‘real’, not high-falutin’, too above-it-all for peasant food. 🙄

And Lindberg’s Nutrition stores/cafes were all in pink (keeps you in the pink, get it?).

I got over it. I liked what I liked. Mock as you will.

I never liked Store brand Soda. Wa ted real Coke or Sprite.

I can’t think of any up up scale food. We ate pretty basic food.

I didn’t like bologna. That’s one of the cheapest lunch meats. I like ham or turkey sandwiches.

After enjoying some at a holiday party when I was maybe 5, I declared that Brie was the only cheese I liked. But I’m pretty sure I ate and enjoyed other cheeses shortly after that.

Somehow, this one takes the cake for me.

When I was a child I was finicky about mushy peas and beans. I could not stand canned ones either.

Unfortunately in the place we lived you either got fresh peas and beans in season or canned. The infrastructure did not supports retail freezers. So this drive my mother bonkers.

Fast forward 30 years and 4-10 year old Mini Mouse can sniff out and reject supermarket prosciutto and mortadella, as well as any previously frozen fish or poultry. My mother said this is Karma.

The chief appeal of Buddig’s smoked turkey when I was young was sharing it with my enthusiastic cats which delighted me. They would sit up and beg and everything.

My parents frequently would have vegetable gardens when I was a kid, and I always believed that whatever they grew had to be inferior to the canned stuff that we purchased at the supermarket. Because, you know, the big, important corporations with the fancy commercials just HAD to be doing a better job, right?

I had fairly ordinary tastes as a kid, but I liked grownup food more than kid food. I don’t think I had mac & cheese until I was an adult. I did love lobster, but that was a rare meal.

One of my kids, however, would get upset with me when I ran out of truffle oil. She was always quite the gourmet.

2 examples of what a pain in the ass a kid can be:

I would only eat Log Cabin Buttered syrup on my pancakes or waffles. The regular stuff without the walloping 2% butter made me gag.

My sister-in-law had a boy in her daycare that would only eat toast if it came from George Webb restaurant. During the breakfast program he would make a huge fuss that the toast came from the toaster and not George Webb and he wouldn’t eat it. So eat something else, right? But then the little prick would cry to his parents that he never gets toast during breakfast even though he really, really wants it. Rather than set him straight the parents went on line and bought a bunch of George Webb paper bags so sis-in-law could tell his highness that his toast came from George Webb. I’m sure she didn’t want to spit on every slice of toast she ever served him.
