I don’t really find the quarry thing funny; it just doesn’t work. I had to say ‘the quarry thing’ because I couldn’t even remember the whole phrase - it’s such an odd phrase - even though I had noticed it before this thread. Point - read this board. How much of the typical internet sub-literacy do you find? Very little. This is not enforced by rants and pits and aggressive attacks. This cultural standard is maintained solely by gentle instruction, followed by brief period of ruthless mocking, and eventual shunning. Unless the poster adopts standard syntax; that works, too. But “we” are not the small percentage that have noticed the silly phrase and been seriously annoyed by it. ---

I stopped when it was no longer a novelty in the context of the SDMB (per most overused board ‘jokes’). I have even this week introduced the phrase and anecdote to certain off-board friends via email, who also found it funny - but then I didn’t use it again. You have to know when what was once humorous becomes irritating, then stop before it does - otherwise you become as annoying as the seven-year-old in that Onion article. ---
