So apparently rural America (modern hunter gatherers) think city folk look down on them

It can be said the cities live in a bubble by virtue of msmith537 post.

diversity - Apparently they are not fully aware of the rural demographics. https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/table/PST045215/00 That is one disparaging remark by msmith537 !

commerce innovation - So only the cities can innovate. I guess all the locally owned and operated ISP’s do not count as innovation. That is two disparaging remarks by msmith537 !

culture - Implies that rural areas are uncultured. Most rural schools have concerts and art productions to sooth the savage breast. That is three disparaging remarks by msmith537 !

Me thinks, msmith537 is an indication, that city folk look down on rural America.

msmith537 misspelled homogeneous

That is nonsense. The change was overseen by an emergency financial manager appointed by Rick Snyder (a republiopath). The emergency financial manager had the authority to remove/replace city officials if they went against him. The switch was more expensive than continuing to get water from Detroit, but that is what the manager pushed for, and the council and mayor supported that decision because opposing it could get them booted out. Pure and simple, it was a republiopath scheme to downgrade Detroit water so that it could be sold off at a bargain price. That is not the way “libdems” operate.

This right here just gave me an idea for pundits and political comedians like Bill Maher and others to Attack Trump supporters. Use his EXACT rhetoric he directed towards the groups he is against back on Trump voters, and when they bitch and moan about being called deplorable and looking down on them and ridiculing them, roll the tape of Trump doing the exact same thing. Show them to their self righteous faces how empty and two faced and inconsistent they are, not in the hopes of persuading them, but in a scorched earth move to highlight how emotionally rotten their hatreds are, and how it’s anyone ELSE but them.

It says a lot about the priorities of Trumps voters and what they value. A Concern for truth is not one of them.

Do you know what “disparaging” means?"

Typical libdem these allegations are not in evidence and are purely speculation.

the elected officials (City council and Mayor) cannot be booted out by an EFM. Only the non-elected City staff and managers can be booted.

Discussion to privatize the Detroit water authority only began (as reported by the medai) in 2014 after the crisis.

Typical LibDim grasping at straws to deflect the blame.

To ask the question is well “disparaging”!

msmith537 contrasted cities having diversity, commerce innovation, and culture while she did not associate those attributes to rural areas, an incorrect generalization, which is disparaging.

I regard or represent drad dog’s whole post as being of little worth.

This sentence makes no sense. Is English your first language?

No. “Disparaging” does not mean “an incorrect generalization”

Please consult a dictionary.

It’s an important point that entirely gets lost if we just try to shoehorn everything into a a concept as simplistic as the rural-urban divide. The downriver area is part of the Detroit metro area. While Detroit is long past the time where it’s the fourth largest city in the country (down to 21 in the last census) the overall metro area still ranks as the 11th largest largest Metropolitan statistical area.

The struggle with the voters Dingell describes is not getting them out of of the rural areas to major metro areas. They are already there. That’s their problem. The big city at the core of their metro area has been dying. It’s been dying for decades. For many of them, it’s been dying for their entire lifetimes. Their non-rural piece of America has serious issues.

Under Michigan statute 141.1567, emergency managers can recommend that the governor remove any official, elected or not, that the manager believes is not “promptly and fully provid[ing] the assistance and information necessary and properly requested” by the manager. Clearly, the emergency manager has a tremendous amount of power over the local officials; that’s the point of having an emergency manager.

The key word is “EFM can recommend” and the governors power is limited and proscribed further.

The governor would never proceed to remove local officials in a 60% black community.

**
LibDem created disaster pure and simple!**

There has to be some reason for the change. I have a hard time understanding,

Why?

Really?

Read 141.1567 again. “Failure of a local government official to abide by this act shall be considered gross neglect of duty”. Therefore, if the emergency manager decides that the local officials aren’t “fully” providing assistance, this counts as neglect of duty, and the governor can remove the official. It’s exactly the situation eschereal described: for the local officials, opposing the emergency manager’s plans could get them removed from office.

Well, I say that he would.

Neither of our baseless opinions carry any weight whatsoever.

First, Democrat does not equal Liberal Democrat. The Democrats are a huge coalition, composed of more than just liberal folk.

Second, again, the emergency manager was appointed by the Republican governor, and the manager had total control over the situation.

You’ll notice msmth537 never actually said any of the words you’re putting in his mouth.

No, you read it again.
Assistance does not mean nor is it stated that city council must vote a certain way in chambers. And in fact there was one council member who was not stupid and who voted no on the whole boondoggle.

Agreed, all posters, myself included are using our 20-20 hindsight. But remember I didn’t start the finger pointing. It was BobLibDem that cast baseless Disparaging remarks on the water inspectors.

MY opinion, All municipalities should be required to become ISO 9000 certified to avoid all of the Flint mismanagement.

And there in lies the root cause of the democrat party failures.
“You can make some of the people happy all the time and all of the people happy some of the time, but you can’t make all the people happy all the time.”

PS. MY experience all over the country, having been in all 50 states and lived in 20 of them, Rural folks are pretty much happy most of the time up to the point they have to deal with some stupid liberal democrat idea.

And that is the rub, the city liberal democrats force rural communities to do what works for them. Or maybe they are just jealous that rural communities are not just totally miserable and afraid of their own shadows.

That is patently untrue and is disparaging. I have observed that people in rural areas will cogitate on changes longer because their planning cycle is synchronized to the growing season.

Good question but the article offers no explanation.

I would say, It is hard to stop the elephant in the room.
Case on point Obamacare in the 1st 100 days.

77% white is not “diverse”.

ISP? Internet Service Provider?

You are going to compare a high school production of Guys & Dolls to Broadway? The Met? The Guggenheim?
I’m not “disparaging” rural America. I’m simply stating the objective fact that major cities offer these things at a level that rural America simply can not compete at. It’s really not even a comparison because that’s what cities are, by definition.

Yes I am when you applaud highschoolers they cherish the memory for a lifetime. Maybe could it be that rural communities value family and community and life more.

To a very select few born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Only the elite can afford tickets to those venues. Others are lucky if they attend once in their miserable lives.

Your attitude brings to mind a poem stanza on the statue of liberty ““Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she With silent lips.”"

Whut? I’m in Boston, which has its fair share of High Culture; if you pick an off-night, and don’t mind having a less-than-ideal seat, you can go see a performance of almost any ballet, opera, or classical concert for around $25. If you can’t swing that, you can get subsidized tickets through various local institutions (the public library system, for one). And if you’re completely broke, there’s free concerts in the park during the summer.

Average people don’t participate in High Culture stuff due to lack of interest, not lack of funds. And if you do want to participate in High Culture stuff, you will have more opportunities and more variety of offerings in a decent-sized city than in ruralia.
