I’m an average guy doing average computer stuff (bit of internet, bit of this, bit of that), and I’m not a diehard IT dude or anything…
Vista is fine.
I was very anti, based on what I’d heard, but it came with my new laptop, and whilst I didn’t like it at first, that was just because I wasn’t used to it. I like it about the same as I liked XP. It’s not better though. Both systems have been pretty robust for me.
I’m an IT dude and there are three key things with Vista:
1 - Memory: 2 GB, please. If you’ve 4 GB or more, Vista 64 is the way to go.
2 - Apply SP1
3 - Turn indexing off.
And you don’t need a decent graphics card, but it sure helps.
On the downside, the only problems I’ve had with Vista since applying SP1 have been to do with copy-protection schemes like Starforce not working with Vista. Fortunately I have more than one machine.
Vista (I’m using Ultimate x64) is fine, the only issues I’ve have to date is:
A small update not applying correctly, fixed by just installing SP1.
My computer BSoD’d three times while playing through Half-Life 1 in steam, no clue why.
It’s not an avoid like the plague thing, I can’t say I prefer it to XP, but I also can’t say I’d go through the trouble of rolling back to XP, or that I’d really care if a new machine came with Vista. It’s an okay OS, better if you have a DX10 capable card and you’re a gamer (though the support for DX10 is a bit thin now).
