> Yeah, I have never heard an interceptor or an assault frigate called a joke ship by anyone before.

And unless I miss my guess you’ve also never flown with a serious 0.0 PvP alliance before. Interceptors and AF’s are a joke. No FC I know has ever or will ever allow, let alone request them on a roam, gate camp or fleet engagement unless the pilot is an absolute noob who can’t fly a real ship.

> [@mswas](#):
>
> interceptors are pretty dope.

No, they are not. They have no niche, at all, especially post speed nerf. Given a choice between a dozen interceptors and one single Sabre only a fool of an FC would request the 'dictors. Especially if the choice grants you one sabre, several anti-support ships and some fleet battleships.

> [@mswas](#):
>
> For instance you have to be able to fly an Assault Frigate at skill level 4 to fly any of the Heavy Assault Cruisers he is suggesting, and Assault Frigates can be very fun throwaway ships.

No. T2 ships are uninsurable. For the same price as an AF which accomplishes precisely nothing, after the initial purchase a pilot can instead be in a fully reimbursable battleship which can absolutely wreck other battleships or support, depending on how it’s fit out.

> [@mswas](#):
>
> I’ve taken them on POS assaults and gotten pretty high up on the DPS scale.

AF’s instapop against any decent POS, or even most crap ones, they are unable to RR a fleet, and if they’re anywhere near top damage then your fleet is doing something wrong. I can’t think of a single POS busting mission I led, that any FC I know lead, or that Pandemic or the NC led that would have been better off with an AF in the pack. Maybe Goons, but they fly Rifters.

> [@mswas](#):
>
> \*\*Finn’s \*\*elitist attitude

I’m an FC in a major 0.0 alliance. I’m talking about what works in 0.0 and lowsec combat. AF’s pop like popcorn when faced with a half competent gang led by an FC who’s got more than his brainstem functioning. And that’s if the FC doesn’t have a dedicated anti-support wing. If he does, you simply will not get within tackling range.

> [@mswas](#):
>
> I absolutely love Ishkurs, one of the best in the game, and in the last alliance tournament they were simply dominating the field.

Judging real PvP by the alliance tourneys is an absurdity. Using that metric we might as well determine that a 10 Caracal or Thorax swarm is totally awesome.

> [@mswas](#):
>
> bad advice for a noob.

No. And any pilot who found themselves in a real 0.0 combat organization would find that the same exact advice was given because its correct, pragmatic, and efficient.

Not at your level no, but I have flown in them. And you are giving advice to a noob, but all of your advice is bad because it’s all advice you’d give to a seasoned player. Your advice doesn’t even come into play until 10m SP or more.

Yeah, a dictor is a good choice. But again, you are giving a noob elite advice.

What battleship do you fly that costs 20m isk?

Yes, it is true that the instapop against a POS, but that’s not their only function.

Like I said, you’re giving black belt advice to a white belt.

Well the point is that you’re creating an artificial criteria for a very specific subset of the game and then acting like a niche in the game is the whole game.

> [@](#):

It makes sense, but it’s the overall context of your advice. “You need to be able to tank properly in an Ishtar.” I’ve been playing for a year and I can only fit an Ishtar properly now, even still my drone skills are somewhat lacking.

As a noob every time I heard advice like yours it was extremely disheartening because it amounted to basically, “Well you should stop playing until you’ve let your character skill for at least six months.”, I don’t know how many times I asked someone for help with a fit and they said, “Use T2 Energized Adaptive Nano Plating.”, ‘I only have hull upgrades IV.’ I would reply. “Oh, then train Hull Upgrades V.”, they’d of course forget their advice a little later when they tell you that you should be training some other skill that takes a week or more, and yet another.

Essentially even in an Armageddon, a noob is going to be cannon fodder in one of your fleets. I did more damage in the small wars I was in, in an Ishkur than I did in a Dominix as a noob.

Essentially even in an Armageddon, a noob is going to be cannon fodder in one of your fleets. I did more damage in the small wars I was in, in an Ishkur than I did in a Dominix as a noob. You basically said, “Don’t bother training an Assault Frigate.”, which is silly because 1) You need to fly one to fly a Heavy Assault Cruiser, and 2) Every relevant support skill is something you need to fly a heavy assault cruiser. and 3) Before you find your way to a 0.0 PVP alliance and get up to the levels you are talking about you can make tens of millions an hour plexing in an Ishkur in high or low-sec.

> [@mswas](#):

Also wrong. I’ve taken low SP caldari spec’d players and turned them into valuable members of my fleets with this exact advice.

> [@mswas](#):
>
> Yeah, a dictor is a good choice. But again, you are giving a noob elite advice.

Wrong there too. The difference between a 'dictor and an AF is only a handfull of days.

> [@mswas](#):
>
> What battleship do you fly that costs 20m isk?

Like I said, you need to learn how 0.0 works. My fully fit battleships cost 5 mil. Any decent corp will have a similar reimbursement program, too. BoB pilots, before they fell, were paying about 15 mil IIRC.

> [@mswas](#):
>
> Yes, it is true that the instapop against a POS, but that’s not their only function.

They instapop against a tiny few pulse 'pocs. They instapop against a tiny few Muninns. They instapop against a tiny few Zealots. Etc etc, etc…

> [@mswas](#):
>
> It makes sense, but it’s the overall context of your advice. “You need to be able to tank properly in an Ishtar.”

No, I didn’t. I specifically pointed out that someone could get into a probing cov ops and get a cut of the loot with only a buddy or two.

> [@mswas](#):
>
> As a noob every time I heard advice like yours it was extremely disheartening because it amounted to basically, “Well you should stop playing until you’ve let your character skill for at least six months.”

That’s just silly. A pilot would be much better off using a T1 Rifter than an AF, tackles just as well and is much easier to get and replace, especially in 0.0. Past that, an extra few days gives them a 'dictor which is worth a dozen interceptors and several dozen AF’s.

Beyond which, I can take a pilot and put him in a perfect RR pulse 'poc in a matter of weeks. T1 fit. It’s better if it’s T2, but T1 is still solid.

> [@mswas](#):
>
> Essentially even in an Armageddon, a noob is going to be cannon fodder in one of your fleets.

What facts, exactly, are you in possession of in order to make such a claim as to how I use my pilots?

And no I didn’t say that someone shouldn’t bother training AF’s. That’s just wrong, especially considering that I recommended HAC’s which have AF IV as a pre-req. I pointed out that it’s nonsensical to spend actual ISK on AF’s. As for why someone would want to spend time in highsec PvE’ing instead of getting into 0.0, that’d depend on whether or not they were a 'bear. Assuming that they like PvP and want to get into the real meat of the game, then they’ll get out to 0.0 asap.

heh alright, I’m convinced.

I actually am looking toward moving that way myself shortly, I’m working on putting all my support skills up to 4s right now.

All the ones that aren’t already 4 or above that is.

And that is exactly WHY I stopped talking about what I wanted to do because I was always told that it was stupid for me to want a titan because I would go out and immediately die.

Why the hell you all assumed that I though I could train for a few months and then get myself a cap ship baffles me … I knew from my own reading that there are a lot of interlocking skills and requirements in a fleet with a cap ship in it …

It seems to me that most players in eve work on the ADD mode of training …

OOOOo Ill train up for this battlecruiser … oo look at that spiffy ship, i need to change my training to get the domi … oo shiney look at _that_ ship …

It seemed to baffle my fellow corpies that I actually set up an evemon profile for a specific hulk profile, and actually STUCK to it the full time … I _still_ have my titan evemon profile, and I am working on it as I finish up my industrial management program. Ill get a titan eventually =) Just like eventually we will end up low sec.

But that’s not what you were told. You were told that you needed to join a big alliance to have a Titan and that it would take a couple years to skill for one. That if you didn’t have fleet support you’d get killed.

No one thought that, we talked to you in exactly the same way we talked to everyone else about everything else. That’s how Eve geeks talk.

Yes, it is difficult for people with gamer ADD to get used to the long training times. The ones that truly frustrate me are the ones that are just barely longer than the queue, those 1.5-2.5 day skills, God those are annoying.

Well you’ve already got a lot of the pre-reqs for a capital ship. I’d like to remind you who helped make that happen. ;p

No a couple people said that, 95% of the guys patted me on the [virtual] head, told me I was a nice little girlie and would lost the titan as soon as I took it out of the station and it was cute that I thought I had a shot at making a titan work out.

and the geeks all dismissed me for being a girl, and figured I didn’t have the brains to do anything more than mine. More of them figured I would get bored and go back to WOW, or maybe hello kitty.

I do agree, which is why I love the queue.

> Yeah, I am only now really getting solid in my combat support skills.

I prefer using a tool like evemon to advise me what I need to take. I may get modules that are not the final ones I plan on, but it all works towards me learning how to fly a fighter. Just like our allies found out the one time I did a plex with them I tell people I am not a fighter, but it doesnt mean I am incapable of fighting … sort of like in that movie set in Australia when Tom Sellek shoots Alan Rickman - just because he says he has no use for a colt hand gun, doesnt mean he doesnt know how to use it. Most of you guys have _no_ idea what I am up to when I am in game while you are off line.

You do know that supercaps can’t dock, right? That once you buy one you are stuck in it, forever, and that if you get out the chances are good that someone’s gonna jack it?

Also, there’s really not much reason for you to have a titan unless you’re jumpbridging freighters in 0.0. What would you do with one?

I was originally planning to be a fighter …

And as to why I want one, because I do … and I have 3 accounts, so if I wanted to I can leave Aru as a titan jock [though my corp boss has my log in and we swap ships all the time …so we could flip the ship between several of us]

Eh… skip salvaging completely for a while unless you plan to ninja mission runners’ wrecks in Empire, or something. And I haven’t tried with the new skill system, but back before you started with double speed skill training you could have an alt skill up for a Bestower in 40 minutes. No reason to train for industrial 4. And none to train for, for instance, Caldari Industrial at all unless you’re going for freighters. Also, ignore Shield Operations unless you plan on passive tanking a shield ship like a Drake (which you shouldn’t be doing). The passive recharge really isn’t anything to write home about, especially if you’re in an armor tanking ship.

As an opening skill train I’d advise starting for Amarr Battleship III or IV, Large Energy Turrets IV, the support skills for cap and hit points and some gunnery, and repair. Allows you the ability to rat in 0.0 or run missions fairly well, especially with a buddy. After that point you can switch over to training for a Sabre and/or Zealot.

I’ll put one of my scout alts into EveMon in a bit and post some sample skill plans here soonish once I finish making/eat dinner tonight.

I take it you mean a PvP’er?
Otherwise you’ve just said that you were planning to be a drone. 😃

Eeeeeeeeeeh… for the price of one titan (to say nothing of one properly deadspace/officer fit titan) you can have two motherships. Or dozens of carriers/dreads/ Or hundreds of battleships. If there’s no reason for you to have it then it’s a silly use of ISK, but I suppose if you want one simply so you can have it then at least you’d have a novel ship to look at when you log in.

1. That’s a recipe for corp theft if ever there was one. This is EVE, a massive investment in the billions is never a good idea to leave as a floating asset, literally.
2. The process of creating more than one titan ready character is tremendously skill, and ISK, intensive. You need Capital Ships V on all characters, and to buy the Titan skills book, and so on. And then you need to spend time on the Titan’s support skills. With the time you spend on that, you could make several cyno alts and a JF pilot, or something. Titans simply don’t make sense unless you’ve got a use for them or you’re at 70+ million SP’s and just looking for something new to train instead of switching SP’s over to an alt on that account or starting a new char only for titan piloting duty.

Ah well, here are a few possibilities (the plans will likely be so large that it’ll take a few posts).

General support skills and the Apoc, zero to fully T1 combat capable in under 3 months without skill respec.

Thanks everyone for the posts. Very informative to say the least. I have a friend who loaned me some isk and bought me a set of +3 implants. I am cruising through some learning skills right now. I also did a remap before I even did anything else and stuck 12 points into memory right off the bat along with having 8 points in everything else except Charisma which is at 5. If I am not mistaken this will reduce the time for learning those skills by quite a fair amount…if I am mistaken it won’t be my last mistake in Eve I suspect.
I will start messing around with Evemon and the stuff u posted Finn…thanks a ton.

🙂

No prob. And yes, a high Mem will help your tier 1 learning skills, but not most of your T2 and all that many of the skills you train after that. I’d advise you to plug in something, say the battleship skill path I suggested, and respec for that. Otherwise you’re going to have wasted a good bit of training time. In general, you want perception/willpower high for combat specing and intel/mem high for support skills/sciencey stuff. Although for most long term plans you do well with per/int.
