So... Has legalized Pot caused the End of Civilization as We Know It?

I routinely drive down the freeway smelling a cloud from the car in front of me. If it’s obvious at 70mph, they’ve gotta really be Cheech & Chong-level blazin’ away in there.

It’s also quite common to encounter a group of young folks whose clothes all reek of the stuff as they walk past. Just as most adults’ clothes reeked of cigs in 1965.

Funny coincidence …
Just yesterday I was finishing up a solo drink & dinner at a fairly upscale bar / restaurant. It had not been busy that night and I’d been bantering with the two male 20-something bartenders throughout the meal.

Anyhow, bill paid and my loose items being gathered up they asked what my plans were for the rest of the evening. To which I replied truthfully: “I don’t know; go for a walk then maybe a smoke.” Meaning in my mind to cover the 4 blocks to a cigar bar for a stogie.

Both guys kinda perked up / stopped what they were doing and looked at me funny. Which puzzled me for a second then I said: “I meant as in cigar, not as in MJ if that’s what you were thinking. MJ’s never been my thing; I associate that stuff with high school or college way back when”. To which they both reply in effect: “A lot more people your age smoke it than our age.”

Who knew it was a fogey drug? I sure knew some retirees do it; I just didn’t realize the cool youngsters don’t (much).

First time anyone has suggested or questioned whether I was a MJ smoker.

I agree with the rest of your statement, but the price comparison does not match my experience. Generally you can get an ounce of seedless weed in Oklahoma under their medical programs for about the same price I was able to get an ounce of brick weed on the black market a few decades ago. So, usually higher quality and more smoke-able weed per gram on the legal market. That’s also without considering the special promotions some dispensaries would run - one ran a special where you’d get a free ounce of pre-rolls (made of their trim and shake) with any purchase.

Now, by the time you get to the prices and quality I get on the black market for high grade indoor bud in Texas, it’s a wash as to whether one is cheaper. The quality on the black market these days is consistently crazily good, and you kind of have to pay a lot to get weed that good in Oklahoma

So, I’d say that not only does legalization make it harder for teenagers to get their hands on marijuana, it’s also generally lowered the price on the stuff for adults in the legal markets, at least for the cheaper stuff. If you want the dankest stuff the legal route has to offer, it’s still unlikely that you’ll have to pay more than you would for the same thing on the black market. An unintended side effect is it seems that there’s nothing but the dankest stuff available on the black market. I imagine that it doesn’t make economic sense to move anything but that level of quality for someone who’s dealing in the black market.

Hmm, kids are always weird, but I know my niece and nephew smoked it both in Texas (illegal) and do the same in New York (legal). They’re generally pretty straight laced, studious kids, but they mentioned that the weed in Texas was generally stronger than the weed they’re getting in college.

Heheh, same planet, different worlds. I’ve ended up buying weed several times because someone knew their target market well and could spot me. Then again, I kind of look like this guy (seriously, I’m about that tall).

Great selfie!

I, OTOH, look more like a cop who forgot to shoot up his testosterone. No bulging veins, but real no-nonsense. With a pretty good Dirty Harry squint.

The end of civilization? No. An increase in that yucky smell wherever there’s a large group of people? Definitely.

“Personally, I smoke to remember… old lovers, train rides, the taste of fountain Cokes when I was a kid. Grass is a lovely, sentimental . . . Readers Digest kind of a thing. I can’t understand why the bourgeoisie doesn’t approve of it.”
