So how *does* Facebook make money?

The other way to use Facebook targeting get is to make things that don’t look like ads. So I can write an article about how we hand-built our still and then let people in the area who are in the area and interested in craft spirjts see my article on their feed. To them it’s just an interesting article on building a still but in reality I just let them all know about my company. The next step is to put a coupon on the company Facebook page for a free tour or tasting so now that they’ve heard about us they check out our Facebook page and see a coupon and then come in and if we’ve done it right they don’t fell like they were advertised too at all.

Right. That is clever advertising that can be of real benefit to the person experiencing it. Good show.

I do see some things on FB that AdBlock doesn’t block that are clearly ads. They just haven’t seemed to be targeted to me very well. I see virtually nothing on mobile at all (with no blocker).

Do they actually sell their data to other companies directly (as in, "here’s a list of everyone who’s interested in buying a car in the next month) or do they only sell the chance to for companies to advertise on their site, targeted to the proper people according to Facebook’s own internal data? Because it seems to me that only the latter is what actually happens, despite people using phrases like “they sell your data” and “you are facebook’s product.”
