So How Many PC Users Are Thinking About Getting A Mac Mini?

I’m not! No way!

(because I’m looking to buy an iMac. :p)

I’ll probably get one, even if it’s just to fool around with Garageband. With three PCs around (yes, they all work and I’m not going to get rid of 'em), I have no room for a full-size Mac but I should have plenty of space for something that’s just 6½".

I don’t use Macs, but I may consider the new mini-Mac as the only need I have for a computer of my own is sorting and editing digital camera pictures, and perhapse some web browsing. If the price with monitor et al is competative it could be good for me to get some exposure to Macs (I’ve used almost every other popular computer type) and would avoid the temptation caused by easily available borrowed or bargain bin games that I would have if I got a PC.

Yes, an excellent reason to get a Mac. I love Garageband. You will find that the Garageband Internet “communities” are great fun too.

You can never have too many computers (well, yes you can, but that’s a different matter)!

That’s the great thing. I’ve got a crowded desk, but I won’t have to reorganize everything to make this Mini fit. It’s going to be great.

Cool! My friend to whom I sold my old Powerbook and got all pissed off that his DVD burner wouldn’t work with iDVD, thanks you!

I don’t have any plans to. $500 is a lot of money; I’d rather put that money towards getting a new PC. If it doesn’t play the latest and greatest PC games it’s of no value to me.

I’m very interested. I’ve actually been playing around with various options on Apple’s Store site for the past couple of days.

So far I have the $499 model plus the 512MB memory upgrade. Total: $574.00
I may spring for wireless, too, I dunno.

Any Macheads here know if the 1.25ghz processor is really sufficient? I’m thinkin’ the memory upgrade would be more cost effective but buying the cheapest has usually come back to bite me in the ass so I’m not sure.

What kind of games should this thing be able to run?

It’s the low end of Apple’s product line, but it should be sufficient for internet stuff, making your own movies, and playing World of Warcraft (though not at the same time). I’d go for at least 512MB myself, but I know some other propellerheads with an entry-level iBook (roughly the same performance) who say their laptops work fine with just 256.

Anything less than Doom 3 should be okay. You can go with Halo or Unreal Tournament 2004 if you need an FPS fix.

Damn that does look nice. But I’m too much of a games whore and really like PC modularity. If it really took off and a lot more games got ported I’d definitely consider it over the next ridiculously overpriced graphics card splurge.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. I like games. Regardless of which one may run them better, there are just plain more of them for the PC.

And am I the only one who doesn’t think it looks all that special/cute? It’s just a box. Yeah, a shiney, white box with rounded corners, but still just a box. And for $500, one can get a low-end laptop, can you not? And once you factor in buying a screen (if you don’t have one, or don’t want to use a KVM switch), a keyboard, mouse, maybe wireless (which nost laptops have as standard now,) a memory upgrade (cause 256 is NOT enough, IMO), the price will be over $600, maybe close to $700. At that price, I’d rather have a laptop (and even be willing to apy more for one) since I can take the whole thing with me (including screen, keyboard, etc…) and play WoW in the pakr if I want to.

Ever since I heard about the Mac Mini I’ve been popping over to the Apple site and ogling that gorgeous computer with unbridled lust. My God, I want it. Unfortunately, I’m a student in debt and selling off my almost-new PC minus peripherals wouldn’t cover it (the MM comes to maybe $725 Canadian, nothing added on). One day…one day you will be mine.

I am (thinking about it), but only out of curiosity. I am a software developer and have often thought it might be interesting to develop for the MAC. But there are other things I’m more interested in, so it won’t be soon.

If you want a laptop, which I do not. And you can’t get a low-end Mac laptop for $500 (and I want a Mac. I’ve got enough PCs already). I am going to place this Mini on some tiny open spot on my already cluttered desk, connect it to my 17" LCD monitor and use my special ergonomic keyboard with it. It’s just perfect for me.

But if I wanted a laptop, no, this would not do it for me.

Nitpick: It’s “Mac,” not “MAC.”

“MAC” is a Media Access Controller.
