I found this site through [cruel.com](http://cruel.com). Someone linked an old thread about people who bave obsessions with popping pimples or something that was pretty funny. Then I looked around and was impressed by the range of topics and how intelligent people seem to be. ---

I found [straightdope.com](http://straightdope.com), oddly enough, from [this](http://www.kasuto.net) Legend of Zelda fan site. The guy who made it had some links to pages he liked, and the straight dope page was one of them. I found the message board after I looked through all the articles. ---

My brother told me about it after finding it on [www.bored.com](http://www.bored.com) so i read what seemed like every article in the archives and discovered the message board when i was looking at the other parts of the site. ---

My sister e-mailed me that there was a site that had the true lyrics and story behind “Louie, Louie”. After quickly replying that she was, as usual, lying, I checked out the link to the homepage that she’d sent me. I wandered into the message board from the homepage, and that was that. I had to withdraw my accusation of Sis lying, since one of Cecil’s columns did address the Kingsmen’s song, but finding this board was worth eating a little crow. ---

I picked up a copy of the original “Straight Dope” book at the Books-A-Million in Fort Myers back in the late 90’s. I was curious if Cecil was still around, so I typed in [www.straightdope.com](http://www.straightdope.com) to see what would come up and there it was. I think I posted on the old AOL board when I was just a little kid, but I didn’t remember it until after I’d been posting here for awhile. ---

An unusual number of people came via [www.bored.com](http://www.bored.com), and I think I might have been one of those too. Initially it was just reading cecil’s columns, then threadspotting, archives, lurking unregistered, registering and posting, and finally a regular visit to wierd earls. And i have introduced others as well. I guess I’m hooked, but I am yet to do a dopefest. Might be on the cards some time soon – I notice there’s another jiwi doper just made his/her presence known recently. ---

Uhh – that was supposed to be a _kiwi_ doper. And there were supposed to be some uppercase letters in the right places there too. That will teach me to type with a sandwich in my hand. I’m glad this place is so forgiving. ---

**Canvasshoes** posted the link to here in another group we used to belong to together. I looked at it and, at the time, had too much going on to get too involved. Then, later on, I checked it out more, registered, lurked and then got more involved. And Thank God, cos its here where I met **Emofkuniv** , who I’m marrying on 7 August 2004 🙂 ---

…and so it goes with my road to the SDMB, but I have never been to [bored.com](http://bored.com) (I will have to check it out, now). I really was bored, and feeling like I had come to the end of the internet, I entered ‘antidisestablishmentarianism’ into my Google searchbar (already knowing full well what it meant, actually a bonus spelling word in second grade). Been reading the master’s work since the eighties. Bought all the books, lurked in the more eclectic establishments in town (hoping to find his columns in the alternative newspapers), you know the drill. When I lived in Austin, I’d read Straight Dope in the Austin Chronicle whenever I remembered to grab a new one when I was somewhere that gave them away. After I moved up here, I was missing Austin something fierce, and went to the Chronicle’s website. They linked to the main SD website, I went to the archives and read those for a few days. Then I got to Threadspotting and read the one about the Missing Cow-orker. After that, I joined the boards. ---

I faithfully read the print _The Straight Dope_ in my local alternative newsweekly for years. After a while, I went to [www.straightdope.com](http://www.straightdope.com) to read the back articles. After I ran out of back articles, I clicked on the messageboards. Been here ever since. ---

I was actually just pondering this the other day, trying to figure out which came first… I do believe I had looked up ‘freezing rain sleet difference’ on Google, and it led me here. I got the answer I was looking for, but didn’t do any poking around. A few weeks later, I looked up ‘placenta stew’ (to this day, I’m really kinda sorry I did), and whattayaknow, straightdope comes through again. Two links to the straightdope in a short period of time - this time I decided I ought to do some investigating and see what was here. Several hours (and a missed deadline) later, I emerged blinking from the depths of knowledge. And have been coming back ever since. That was about 4 years ago. This would be the first message I’ve ever posted.
