Pretty bad. The tape library ate one of the tapes I needed for a restore. As far as I can tell, no one supports it anymore (a replacement drive would be nice, the tape is probably beyond saving). The support tech at the drive manufacturer is insisting they couldn’t possibly have made it because it doesn’t have the correct label on it. ---

Weird – our daughter, MilliCal, has just left for a trip to Europe. Without us. Sniff. Part of it is sadess that she’s gone for a week. Part is sadness that we _have a daughter old enough to do this._. And we wouldn’t mind going with her. But we can’t. ---

I got the fastest oil change in the west, which was awesome. Then the baby wouldn’t take any nap at all, all day. Then she barfed at bedtime again, but only a tiny bit this time instead of two projectile gushers like Wednesday night. And her grandma was holding her when it happened. And my husband took me out to a nice restaurant, and we saw friends there. It all kind of evened out, I guess. ---

Squeeeee!”.:smack: I did know he’d be here, since he was our guest speaker; it did come as a surprise, however, that he was the one who’d been holding up the damned elevator. I don’t think you’d’ve made a fool of yourself; there are loads of people here from across academic disciplines who have that ‘I’m too cool for school’ attitude, and they’ve fallen apart like schoolgirls if he so much as looked at them and said, ‘Hi!’ in _that voice_. 🙂 He was going to some business meet ‘n’ greet luncheon, because he asked where I was headed (up to Fenway for the in-park tour they do), which he thought sounded way cooler. I didn’t get a chance to go to his talk, but a lot of people squee’d and he took it all in good fun, according to a colleague. Also, anyone who had a panel opposite the time of his speech had zero attendees outside the speakers and the moderator; they shouldn’t have put anything else on at the same time! ---

Figured I’d better wait until the day had passed before commenting, in case that would have jinxed things, but nothing unusually tragic happened to my world that I’m aware of. People who enjoy getting worked up over the superstition aspects of Friday the 13th can rejoice that this is one of those “maximum years” for the phenomenon where there are three Fri/13 dates this year: Jan, Apr, Jul. However, it does remind me of one of my favorite fortune cookie things: “It’s a bad day to be superstitious.” ---

It’s just that I have a history of making a complete idiot of myself in front of celebrities. I once worked in a resteraunt where Mark Summers was getting some take out and the only thing I could think of to say was “OMG do you know who you LOOK just like? Squeee!” and he was kind of like 'Um…yes I do." I was so embarrassed afterwards. I was also once working in a big box electronics store where Dexter Cokely (a former Dallas Cowboys player–I think he was a tight end?) shopped regularly. The first time he came in while I was there, the security guard came up to me after he left and said “OMFG do you KNOW who that was?” and I was like “No…who?”. When the security guard told me I was like, “Well it’s kind of hard to see their faces in those little helmets and besides, I’m usually staring at their backsides, not their faces, when they’re playing.” Husband has met Jessica Simpson…she came into his store looking for a specific gaming system (XBox I think it was) when she was dating Tony Romo. Oddly enough…the first celeb I ever met, I didn’t even realize who he was until afterwards. We’d taken a family trip to WDW and my parents decided that at 16 (me), 13 (sisterchick) and 10 (brotherthing) we were old enough to wander around the parks by ourselves. We were on the monorail from The Magic Kingdom to Epcot when a guy in a teeshirt, jeans and a lab coat started talking to us. I didn’t think anything of it…the car was full of kids and parents. I don’t remember what we talked about…probably about the parks. It was only on the bus from the hotel to The Magic Kingdom the next day that we realized who it was: Bill Nye the Science Guy—we recognized him from a poster on the bus. ---

Yay, one more 13 Friday in July – I hadn’t realised this year was a three-fer. **SticksAndString** – what’s funny is that I was on the T coming back from Harvard earlier today, and noticed that there are adverts for (I think) an insurance company featuring George Takei – your story made me wonder if he’s taken the T, and what anyone who might see the poster, then look at him, then look back at the poster might think!
