Nice job, St.G! Dobies are the biggest babies. She doesn’t look as chubby as I was imagining; you should be able to get that weight off her in no time. Treat management is the key (after proper diet, of course). ---

I expect that having room to run around and other dogs to play with will pare some of it down; and also improve muscle tone. Too much diet restriction may backfire. ---

I’m cis-female (and more content with that now that I’m past menopause), and I would think my screen name (my RL first name) is obviously female, but one never knows if others will agree about the apparent gender of a name. ---

For the first time, Poppy voluntarily came into the house. She’s spent the last couple hours lying beside my chair, happy and quiet as can be. Good news, too, she met my cat [Milo](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/introducing-new-cat-molly-um-milo/1024409)and had no reaction except to keep as far away as possible. I’d tried bringing her into the house a couple days ago and she was submissively peeing and wasn’t happy, so I let her be the lead on this. Today, I let her come with me down to the barn to feed my horse (her mind was blown) and when I came back to the house, she followed me right in. All the dogs are settled down with her. StG ---

Sounds like great progress, and so fast! Very good to hear! Poor Poppy has been through a lot, but she seems to be recovering fast due to your good care. All she needed was a little love and a chance. Topper, one of the Salukis we collected over the years had been kept in an outside kennel and, while not as bad as Poppy, was skittish towards people. The reason we were getting him was the owner/breeder had a surfeit of Salukis and felt we could give him a better life. We were warned it could take him a while to warm up to us and we spent a good half hour giving him chest and butt rubs – no head pets since he’d shy away – before we left for the motel. We picked up some MickeyD including a plain hamburger for him and laying down plenty of towels in case of fear peeing, fed him the burger after it had cooled. After about fifteen minutes he’d installed himself on the bed and was the chief bed dog the rest of the time we had him.
