I think the main question here isn’t if you were right in giving a note in this one instance. The question is how often does one go right to the edge and then sticks their big toe over the line before it becomes a problem that should be addressed more aggressively. In my opinion it doesn’t matter how many times you almost get a warning as long as you don’t do enough to get one. Others may see it differently.
I think that’s a great idea. After we pray and call to Jesus (maybe let him handle a rattle snake and speak in tongues) we could then sing the national anthem while waving a big old red, white and blue flag.
The issue in that thread is “Liberal Mind vs. Conservative Mind”, and his post was appropriate for that issue.
ISTM that your position amounts to a combination of 1) his post is likely to antagonize other people and 2) you think it’s ridiculous.
Either of these alone would presumably be OK, but the combination is not. I guess that’s a board policy issue (ISTM that there may be a similar policy on certain types of racist statements).
Ditto. And also in a PM, a mod told me I was completely out of line for using a particular expression in a particular way. Another poster, afterwards, used the exact same expression in the exact same way. Response? Crickets chirping.
Look. This is about DT. He’s not going to get banned. He’s not even going to get suspended. He’s going to be told, repeatedly, that it’s going to happen. But, as he well knows, it’s simply not going to happen. Basically, he’s the new Opal in regards to behavior on the boards and consequences thereto.
I don’t speak for any other mods. By definition, each of us will have different tolerances.
But to go back in history, if danielinthewolvesden, satan and Wildest Bill (whom I still miss, he owes me $50 because I’m Jewish) can be banned then anyone can.
Sure, DtC is probably the prime example in recent history of someone who’d been here for a long time and was a popular poster (or at least well known) who finally pushed things too far and got the axe. So, yeah, could happen to anyone eventually. I don’t think that’s the question the OP is really asking though, and honestly it does seem a legitimate complaint in this case. I can’t think of any examples where posters would argue with Mods about a ruling (note or warning) in a thread and not be told to take it to ATMB, and perhaps getting a warning for continuing the discussion.
I miss a couple of those guys, but I only read their stuff, I wasn’t posting much back then. Still not exactly sure why danielinthewolvesden & satan were banned, but perhaps the sent some really nasty PM’s to the staff. Of course those were the old days and I don’t think you even had to be warned first. Mind you, having read back some of their last posts it is clear there was something going on. Today they’d at least get a “cooling off” suspension.
DtC- I miss the debates and his knowledge but not his intellectual dishonesty.
I see where you’re coming from and how DT’s comments could be interpreted that way. But I didn’t read them as arguing with a Mod. IMO, his original comment that got a mod note wasn’t wildly out of place in the thread, but it was just over the line enough to warrant a note. I think using the word “evil” is the tipping point for me - it’s not being a jerk or something deserving of a warning, but it hinders further debate rather than continuing it.
His subsequent posts, however, were more in line with the debate and didn’t use the overtly prejudicial wording of his first. He raised points that, while many might not agree with them, at least didn’t cut off further discussion.
Well, to be fair Bill had posited that Jews were just naturally better at finance and business. I then got him to agree to send me $50 in lieu of my ‘persuading’ him to send more each month.
