Richard Halliburton did it in 1928-a simpler time , to be sure. Bt his description of watching the moon rise from the top is something amazing. Can it be done?

There’s really nobody there to stop you, IME, although a local cop might spot you and take exception to it. It’s a dangerous endeavor. Those blocks are massive and eroded, so falling is a very real possibility. I would suspect there is a local law that says you can’t do that, since these are protected by the Antiquities Ministry. However, I doubt that they have the money to enforce it. They can’t even stop the illegal digging that goes on in that area.

A side note: there is a Muslim faction that wants all of these ancient monuments destroyed.

> Your photo 586 shows the road going to the back side of the pyramids. That’s where my driver had a head-on collision with a guy on a camel. It was quite a scene, with the driver and the camel jockey screaming and slapping at each other, while the camel squalled its outrage. It ended up with my $10 changing hands and everyone was mollified.

> You were wise not to climb up inside of Cheops. After you reach the top, you realize that you have to come back down, much of it on your butt, in the heat and the dust and the human funk of several millennia.

> Did you make it to the Khan al Khalili (huge shopping bazaar, for those who don’t know)?

In Edfu, our carriage’s horse was hit by a car (!!!) and the driver made it keep on running. My face alternated between this  and 😕 for the duration of the ride back to the boat. I still can’t believe that happened.

We actually didn’t get to the bazaar because the tour guide felt it wasn’t totally safe to go that day. She said we could go, it wasn’t like, YOU’LL DIE IF YOU GO HERE!!! or anything, but it was her opinion that a: we weren’t missing much and b: it wasn’t totally the best idea. She also said that it’s particularly bad lately, even outside of protests-- just because tourism is so far down that shop owners have gotten horrifically pushy, even by Egyptian standards.

Rumor has it that you can pay off the guards and hop up to the top-- [some Russians did it not that long ago](http://gawker.com/5992398/the-unbelievable-photos-taken-by-the-crazy-russians-who-illegally-climbed-egypts-great-pyramid). Honestly, when we got to the pyramids, the first thing our group said to one another was: “Wait, people willingly climb _that?!_” Perhaps that was just our lazy American side kicking in.

Here’s the best part of that sign: so, our friend took us there because one person in our group wanted to see a crocodile. Fine. They have two sad little crocodiles in a cage, which we saw and that made us sad. All is well, I guess. Then, the guy who runs the place came over, stick in hand, and started poking the crocodiles so they’d snap for us. The whole time I was like, “No, no, no, it’s ok! You don’t have t— ok.” Sixty seconds later, we are walking to look at something else and encountered that sign. I died laughing and had to pose in front of it :).
