So...I took my daughter and her friends to a Fall Out Boy concert (observations)

I took my 16 year old daughter and her best friend to that same tour concert here in Indy. I’ve liked Fall Out Boy for a while, and thought it was a good concert overall. My favorite of the opening acts (besides Metro Station) was All Time Low. Hey Monday & Cobra Starship were ok, but not great.

Yes, I think the new bands work a little harder these days because it’s harder to actually get somewhere.

But it was a good concert.

I ahve most of one of thier albums on my “regular rotation” mp3 cd in my truck.

On the same CD is Boston, All American Rejects, DragonForce, Coheed and Cambria, Paramore, Buck Cherry, Muse, Rob Zombie, White Zombie, Poison, and the Fratellis (among others).

I have a varied music interest, some of which I blame squarely on RockBand.

I’m 43, if it matters.

A band named after Radioactive Man from The Simpson’s sidekick can’t be all bad.

I think they are what the kids are calling “emo” these days. I’m not going to run out and buy their T shirt or anything, but they have a similar punk-pop sound to Green Day and Blink 182 that I like.

My wife is a moderate Fall Out Boy fan, I think she saw them with My Chemical Romance a few years back.

I could be mistaken.

I also find myself liking their music.

The funny thing about that is they didn’t even know what the name meant. The story goes that they asked audience members to call out suggestions for a band name, or something like that. That’s why they wrote it incorrectly as “Fall Out Boy” instead of “Fallout Boy.”

I just listened to a few “blurbs” of them on itunes. I was getting a bit of a prog rock vibe.

My kid really digs his song “Dy Ming-a-Ling”. I tell her that “Gohnny B Joode” is better, but she doesn’t really care about the classics of modern music, just the slightly dirty lyrics.

As much as I like the band, I’m shocked that the OP and others thought they sounded good live. I haven’t seen them in concert, but I’ve watched a broadcast of one of their concerts a few months ago, and they sounded much worse than the studio tracks do. So this TV broadcast was a fluke, and they might not suck if they’re ever in the area?

In general, I’m not really a fan but they do a pretty kickin’ cover of The King of Pop’s Thriller

That is a weird tour all around. The other major opening band is Weezer, and I’ve seen Weezer play at the same venue that Blink is playing at, as the headliner. (And I saw Blink-182 co-headline there with Green Day a few years ago.)

Most likely the concert was recorded for television by the television crew, which did not jack into the bands mix, but simply recorded the concert sound off a couple of mics in the audience. This is a time honored practice guaranteed to produce sub-par results, and has been seen in many a live concert simul-cast.

That link goes to Beat It, not Thriller. Still pretty good. I love the guitar work.

Step son.

I have a 14 y.o. daughter so I’m getting exposed to current pop hits for the first time in many years. Some of it I like, but I’m not a big fan of Fall Out Boy. Just from the few tunes I’ve heard, their lyrics irritate me… they sound like snarky boys who think they’re all that and a bag of potato chips. But as I say, I’ve heard only a few of their songs.
