So I'm Finally Watching Buffy... [Progressive unboxed spoilers]

I never really got that. She’s not doing anything useful in prison. She should have been out on the streets busting vamps or something. When Faith accidentally killed the mayor’s assistant, Buffy encouraged her to go to the police. What the fuck for? She going to jail isn’t going to bring him back.

And a psychotic Slayer is going to be far too unreliable and dangerous to be useful. In fact, we see a neat illustration of that point in Angel:
At the end of the fouth season, Connor has more-or-less snapped. Remember that he’s got something close to Slayer-level powers, as a result of growing up in a hell-dimension. Anyway, at one point, he’s trying to talk down a suicidal man - but instead loses his temper and beats him to death. Then he takes a bank hostage.

That’s the problem with an unstable Slayer - they might still do some good, or they might do really horrible things. They can do a lot of both, and there’s no way to tell which it’ll be.
Sorry about that. I didn’t catch onto you meaning Angel, not Buffy. I did find a source, though. PM sent.

Yay, I get to play! Saw pretty much every episode when they first aired in the UK, but recently took advantage of an offer on Amazon for the complete box set to watch them all again.

Season 1, episode 1: What on earth is Angel wearing? What’s the deal with the hideous shiny black jacket and the ridiculously hugely collared shirt?

And another thing, why are all these high school kids, even the studious ones like Willow, out at a club every night of the week? My mother wasn’t the strictest but she would have allowed my to do that at that age.

Don’t apply the rules of logic to Sunnydale. I love how suddenly there’s a huge college campus there - it’s like in a video game where at first you can’t get to half the world because there’s a dude sleeping on a bridge. And of course there’s only one club. The most dangerous club in the world. “Hey, you guys want to go to the Bronze tonight?” “What, that place full of high school kids who aren’t old enough to drink?” “Yeah, they always have awesome international bands there! Last time we went three of us got eaten by vampires, though.” “Uh, yeah, I think I’ll stay in.”

Xander and Willow don’t have attentive or caring parents. Buffy sneaks out.

Some of these complaints actually have in-universe explanations.

It was pointed out multiple times that the parents of all the main characters (Buffy, Willow, Xander, Cordelia and Oz) have extremely inattentive parents. It’s hinted that Xander’s border on abusive and Cordelia’s father eventually goes to jail because he’s a tax cheat.

UC Sunnydale (unnamed at the time) was first seen in Season 2 Episode 5, “Reptile Boy.”

Yes, but Willow’s a geek. She wouldn’t want to be out every night, surely?

She’s friends with Buffy, who used to be very popular before she became a Slayer. I’m sure it’s Buffy that’s encouraging Willow to go out every night.

By the time Willow gets to college she’s cool enough to do it on her own.

Right, but Dracula’s mansion just appeared. It’s a joke they enjoy on the show.

That’s the only time that joke was used and it had a mystical explanation. Dracula’s appearing/disappearing castle is also somewhat common in other Dracula lore.

I don’t recall them ever mentioning anyone’s grandparents on the show…

Tabula Rasa… Tabula Rasa… forget the mistake you read…

Your name is now Randy Giles.

Season 7, Episode 15 - “Get It Done” - Buffy and Dawn mention their grandparents.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Not to mention a mention of Tara’s grandmother in “The “I” In Team” - Season 4, Episode 13.

Finally got Season 5 Ep. 10 of Angel from Netflix, ‘‘Soul Purpose.’’

I’m not so sure it was worth the wait. I’m less than impressed by Boreanaz’ directing. Though I suppose the ‘‘Angel lays in bed and feels sorry for himself’’ theme is not entirely out of character.

I do hope they go with the ‘‘Yeah, what the hell are we doing at Wolfram and Heart, anyway?’’ line of thinking for future episodes. I’d like to see the finale arc follow them from being WRH bitches to actually getting back on the side of the good guys again.

Speaking of arc, there really isn’t one in this season yet.

In two episodes, in fact. You are about to hit the meat of the season. Heck, “Smile Time” alone makes the whole series worthwhile!

I was actually disappointed with Smile Time, but it may have been due to hype that can’t be lived up to.
After loving the “gimmick episodes” of Buffy, like Hush, The Body, and OMWF, I was very much looking forward to the much loved “puppet episode” of Angel. It was cute, but would’ve been better if I hadn’t known what was coming. Maybe I’ll re-watch it and see if I still feel that way.

“You’re Welcome,” on the other hand, came out of nowhere and hit me like a ton of bricks. One of the best episodes of either show…
I have to wonder about the placement of Smile Time

It’s a very fun, light-hearted, episode. And then the very next one? A Hole in the World. The guttiest of gut-punches. Since Smile Time could have been put at almost any point in the season, I have to think the producers chose to put it there so that the audience would feel all the more impact from Fred’s death. Roller-coaster ride, indeed.
