> The letter is the focal point of the film, as it demonstrates and illustrates the changes the students undergo during the course of the day; their attitudes and perspectives have changed and are now completely different…
>
> So, no, they’re not necessarily going back to their cliques on Monday…

I love the movie, but if we are being accurate, everyone else let Brian (the brain), to write the letter, which (as far as we know) they never saw or approved… the other 4 paired up to pursue romantic interested…

> Yeah, there was a reason that Hughes was the master of the teenager movie during his short career. Usually movies about teens came down on an us vs them mindset. _The Breakfast Club_ was in many ways the first film to address diversity among teens. Granted, it was still limited, but it was by far wider than anything that had been attempted before.
>
> More importantly, it makes the case that no matter how different we are from each other our similarities are stronger. This is a message that even most adults need to come to terms with. The message of _The Breakfast Club_ transcends high school kids.

Which is why I believe it would resonate if remade today.

Loved that show. I still crack up when I hear some of the one-liners.

From memory, not actual quotes:

“Excuse me, sir, but is Barry Mannilow aware that you have raided his wardrobe?”

“This is the worst fake i.d. I’ve ever seen. Do you realize you’ve made yourself 52?”

Break out the Bryan Adams and Celine Dion.

Hey, it’s Thanksgiving here at least. I’m in my bathrobe, drinking beer and watching the reboot of Planet of the Apes.

Good times.

And of course as I pointed out in the last BC thread, feel old as you realize all the kids in the movie would now be older than the teacher who was watching them. 🙂

> I was _born_ between 1983 and 1986 and the idea that high school can be vicious and is filled with cliques yet we are actually more the same than we think we are is not lost on me.

I attended high school 1967 through 1971. The same cliques were there, along with a few others.

> That’s crazy talk. The social dynamics covered in that movie wasn’t just an 80’s thing. It’s a dynamic that still exist today and probably will in perpetuity.

I graduated HS in 1999 and those kinds of cliques had been dead for a long time. I never saw The Breakfast Club until after college, but I thought the characters were pretty silly, to be honest.

> Molly Ringwald was talented. She got blacklisted in Hollywood for a perceived snub of Lillian Gish. Some magazine, like Life, did a spread where young actors had lunch with selected golden age (or in Gish’s case, even earlier actors) and a reporter, where they talked about the business, then and now, and shared their experiences. Johnny Depp met with Jimmy Stewart, and so forth. Ringwald was supposed to meet with Gish, but her limo had a flat (or so she said) and somehow word didn’t get to Gish, who sat at the restaurant for over an hour before deciding she’d been stood up.

> Ringwald didn’t work for some time after that.

It was [People](http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20095610,00.html) and Ringwald claimed that she’d injured her hand, couldn’t find a cab, and then was given the wrong address. As for the blacklist claims, those sounds even more far-fetched. The People article was from 1987 and Ringwald has worked steadily since then without a break in her IMDB page. She just never re-reached the fame she had as a child actor. It happens.

They actually address this in the dialogue. Brian asks, " Um, I was just thinking, I mean. I know it’s kind of a weird time, but I was just wondering, um, what is gonna happen to us on Monday? When we’re all together again? I mean I consider you guys my friends, I’m not wrong, am I?"

Claire says, a few seconds later, “Are we still friends, you mean? If we’re friends now, that is?”

Brian: Yeah…

Claire: Do you want the truth?

Brian: Yeah, I want the truth…

Claire: I don’t think so…

Even better is the follow-up:

“What do you need a fake ID for anyway?”

“To vote, duh.”

And hanging out with a “number of girls in the Niagara Falls area”.

I graduated in 85 as well and it’s funny how my perceptions of Vernon (and Red on That 70s show) shifted radically once I had teenagers. I am much more sympathetic than I was when I first saw it and thought Vernon was a complete jam tart.
