Sure, the MAGA-hat wearing base might thrill to a Paxton or Rudy nomination. But as long as Mitch McConnell has a pulse, under any Republican Administration you’re going to get exactly what you got out of the last one – smart-but-dogmatic, 45–55-year-old, Federalist-Society-approved drones who’ve spent their careers dutifully climbing the conservative legal ladder and who will quietly but inexorably advance conservative positions. ---

Lindsay Graham’s officially a “no” on Jackson, citing her child pornography sentencing. When I was working the polls in 2020, a conservatively-dressed young woman was handing out flyers about Madison Cawthorn. When I talked with her, she explained that she’d gone to college with Cawthorn at a small conservative Christian college, and that she and several other of his classmates had driven down for election day to campaign _against_ him. Their experiences with him were so extreme that they could not in good conscience stand by and watch him run for public office. This morning, a friend posted a link to a story in our local paper: “Madison Cawthorn stopped again for speeding on I-40, tells officer he is on his way to orgy.” I clicked twice on the picture before realizing it was April Fools. In my defense, if you think that story is the tiniest bit implausible, you’re not very familiar with our esteemed congressional representative. ---
