The Self Demonstrating article for BRIAN BLESSED
Oh, and the Wild Mass Guessing page for Speed Racer is hilarious, due to the obvious joke.
Well, yes, that’s the point of a spinoff wiki. It’s the exact same content.
And it’s legal because the original concept of wikis was about sharing information without needing copyright, and most wikis are still set up that way, with licenses like the Creative Commons mentioned above. Wikis have always been about freedom of information and community.
And the simplified backstory is that FastEddie prefers to run the website like it’s his own personal website instead of involving the community, and has made some poor choices in that regard. The two that finally broke the camel’s back were a mass censorship campaign that went beyond what was actually necessary (including bannings for complaining), followed by changing the license in response to another spinnoff wiki from a guy who was unfairly banned because Eddie was in a bad mood (not even about the censorship, even.)
And, yes, that censorship campaign started because some troll reporter on the site to Google and got their Google Adsense money stopped. But, like I said, Eddie went far and beyond what was needed to deal with that, as he started taking personal offense to people having different ethics than him on HIS website. And that’s what was infuriating to many. TVTropes was originally set up as a collaborative website, with the ownership position just being a facilitator, not a dictator. In other words, like how Jimbo owns Wikipedia.
I’m glad someone actually had the carrythrough to actually pull it off. I sure didn’t back when I was banned for a single complaint about the deletion of the page for Lolita. (This especially bugged me because they eventually put it back.)
Note, that should be “a troll reported the website.” And I when I say troll, I mean probably someone else who got banned for what they considered an unfair reason. There are no warnings over there. A banning happens first, and then you are supposed to beg for forgiveness.
And I told them repeatedly about how much ill will that would engender. I warned them that all it takes is one disgruntled person with the right know-how to cause massive problems. It’s only a matter of time before the DMCA notice happens and actual legal battles get started.
Ok, I get the situation a little bit better. Thanks everyone.
I remember when it went dark a few years ago with panic about the sex stuff. I haven’t liked it as much since, but I’m finding All The Tropes not as easy to use.
My tip is when you read the main page for a particular work, don’t forget to click on the extra tabs at the top (trivia, Funny, Characters, YMMV, etc.). Sometimes those pages are better than the main page.
Yeah… FastEddie.
He seems to make some pretty arbitrary changes to the site from time to time with the justification of “because it’s better this way, stop whining.” This includes changing out the site handles hottips (from being able to have potholes within the hottips to potholes breaking the hottips), for no reason that was ever really explained, to removing the abiltiy to use strikethrough text in the articles (which tended to make an already very meta website a bit more meta than he liked I guess), to refusing to support a “Quote” button in the Forums to allow users to make it clear who they are replying to (you can still use a quote box, but you have to copy paste and type in the
[quoteblock]
tags yourself, which means that he’s not actually bothered enough to remove the feature, and too lazy to properly employ it like every other forum does).
So yeah.
Still tooting my own horn, but with thanks to all contributors another was launched today: Trees Into Toothpicks
