# So I've got no Internet at home now

And I don’t know for how long, either, following a large dispute with my parents. Undoubtedly this is for my own good, as they keep saying, but I can’t see how. This means I can only use the Internet at school for a couple of hours.
Forgive me, I’m just cranky and horribly grumpy over the situation. :mad: ☹

Thanks. I’d been expecting this because it’s been acting weird for months. Started out with a USB problem and escalated from there. The timing is probably my fault though, I think I shorted out one of those wonky USB ports. At least it’s booting as of early this morning but everything has to be reinstalled.

Well, then, missy, do your chores. If, after everything is done, then ask.
Believe me, if my kids came to me and said, “I’ve swept the floors-cleaned my room-folded the laundry-scrubbed the bathroom” without me asking and hounding them to, they could have unlimited access to the internet. (After I recovered from my faint, of course.)
Sorry, sweetie, but they hold the cards. Do your chores, get your grades up, and then you’ll see.

I sure hope so. I think everything except the OS was where it was supposed to be.
In the past week, I’ve changed [the case & power supply](http://www.xoxide.com/xgbox-mge-viper-kr.html), the motherboard, the 3½ drive, and swapped out two old 40gig HDS for a new 200gig. I also got Norton Ghost to transfer the old C drive to the new one but after several tries of trying to get it to boot with that old drive image on the new drive, I gave up and did a complete reinstall. I made a backup copy of all the important stuff before swapping out the old drive. I had started copying everything from an intermediary drive when I went to bed at 2:00. I’ll see what’s where when I get home.

Just as a data point, how old are you? I got the impression that you’re in university. How do they expect you to do your homework without internet?

Generally speaking, back then, no material was posted on the internet with the expectation that students would get it. Several of my classes have material posted online with the expectation that they be read before coming to class. Not to mention the research databases and translation tools I use on a daily basis.

Yeah, one of my new classmates was using her cell phone and I just conversationally mentioned that I don’t have a cell phone. She was stunned. Literally. The look of shock that I got was priceless.
So I asked her, since I am 10 years older than most of the people I am now in school with, “Do you even remember what life was like without cell phones?”, and she had no response to that one.
It amazes me that people think they can’t live without stuff. Put down the phone, step away from the computer, and Live. Friggin’. Life.
So you can’t use the Internet. Cool. Go for walks. Read a book. Take advantage of the situation. But don’t feel bad about it.

I can only speak for my university, but while it is certainly possible to get by without a personal computer and without internet, it means you’re consigned to a life of standing in lines, waiting for free computers; of doing homework based on what hours the lab is open rather than when you want to etc.
It can absolutely be done. But it’s a pain in the ass if it’s not strictly necessary.
