I love short hair on women, still, I imagine the lady’s not doing much these days.

I liked her before.
I liked her after.
I liked her when she didn’t give shit.
I liked her when she yawned.

And when she fell asleep, I kissed the very top of her head and said,
"Sweet Dreams, Katy!

Just because you hate some of us… doesn’t mean we All Just Suddenly Stopped Loving You…"

Audrey Hepburn, Clara Bow, Halle Berry, Natalie Portman. All of them were “surrendering to the journey to the grave”? Whatever.

> Interesting. I can’t say I’ve followed Ms. Perry’s career and image all that closely, but I never got an over-managed, focus-grouped, design-by-committee vibe from her. Yeah, she turned the bubblegum dial to 11 and ripped off the knob, but there seemed to be enough self-awareness about it to make me think it was her idea. Of course, maybe that’s just what her handlers want me to think.

Not a fan of her music so I don’t follow her. I would say the short hair look is less surreal than her previous stage appearance. I have no idea how she looks when she’s sitting around the house watching TV.

I’m not going to judge her looks because I simply don’t care. But her looks are a marketable commodity. If she’s selling widgets then she benefits from optimizing her appearance just like anyone else in the business. I suspect she pays people to make that happen.

I think she looks fine but looked much better with long hair, IMHO. Her self-description of her natural hair color is “dishwater squirrel brown”. 😃

When I saw the short hair, my first thought was “oh, once too often bleaching/candy color dye.”

Oh, yes, a lot of musicians definitely definitely cultivate a personal image and appearance to go along with their music. Would David Bowie and Prince be as popular if they hadn’t looked like David Bowie and Prince, respectively? I don’t deny that, but I was speculating on whence Perry’s image comes; is it decided by a team of media consultants and focus groups, or is it just Katy being Katy?

In general, and this specific case, I tend to like women’s hair a bit longer. But not too long; collar- or shoulder-length often does it for me. First and foremost, though, she should look, and dress, and act in a way that makes her happy.

While we’re on the subject, I tend to look on this sort of music, the young, popular, Britney/Justin/Spice Girls stuff somewhat more kindly than a lot of people. It gets derided as being easy, and catchy, and forgettable. That’s not a bug, that’s a feature. Kids need that gateway music when they’re growing up. They need something that will open them up to worlds of great music for the rest of their lives. People who’ve outgrown that kind of music forget that it’s there just so it will be outgrown. Bless you, Katy Perry, for creating millions of addicts who will grow up and get hooked on the hard stuff.

Now, what the hell she ever saw in Russell Brand I have no idea.

> I’m sure if we designed a more perfect world, hair length on a woman would not be an indicator of youth/health, but we have eons of generations that have evolved to find youthful qualities more attractive in women. I don’t think this can be trained out of us males in any way, so while I empathize with the burden of caring for long hair, I don’t really care because attraction is not a logical thing for me. Either I find you attractive or I don’t. I don’t get to choose.

You do get to choose whether or not you use bad evo-psych to make your preference the only natural thing. Lots of men like things that don’t fit into your “eons of generations” narrative, which proves that sexual attraction is more complex genetically and culturally than this naive nonsense.

I haven’t and probably won’t have time today to look into it but clearly this is a nature/nurture argument. You seem very certain of your position. What’s your evidence? As I say I haven’t looked into it so I have an open mind, but you don’t seem to.

I do not like her in a box.
I’m sure she’s happy, clubbing with fox.
She likes to dance, sing with the band
And tickets get sold to _shocker_ fans.

I do not like the scandal sheets.
But not all life’s music & beats.
She does her job; she is a pro.
(hey you write albums on the go)

She does happy, she doesn’t age
she makes fans cheer (…and from a stage!)
And if you think that costume’s strange,
Blink your eyes; she just might change.

I just like her music, Robot Arm.
I like her music; what’s the harm…?
But, yeah, its true, thats all the show.
“What else” isn’t for me to know.

Does she like green eggs and ham?
Or green hair while singing ‘Wham’?
ask Mayer, Brand, Orlando Bloom.
(because we’ve only met through iTunes…)

😉

Being firmly in the straight man group and an admirer of short hair on beautiful women (including my own wife), this haircut is terrible for her looks. I know that publicity-wise it is a good move, but on a purely “yeah baby!” factor it’s bad.

Because crushes are inherently superficial.

Evo-pscyh doesn’t work at the individual level. It only explains possible tendencies. It is bad evo-psych to find an evolutionary explanation for your personal preference and say that this explains it.

The nature versus nurture argument is related but a different though what I’ve read on the subject definitely suggests that, whatever nature is involved, there is a lot of variation caused by nurture. Which makes sense, as this is the default in any situation.

I mean, there’s stuff about imprinting that happens with fetishes. Something at some point in development connected the fetish with arousal. Then there’s evidence that attraction to people actually grows due to repeated contact.

Then there’s just my own experience with attraction changing due to exposure. Porn, an environmental stimuli, has definitely changed my attraction, both increasing in some situations, and decreasing in others. I’m sure anyone who uses porn realizes they are more picky than they used to be. I’m less sure if they notice that things that used to be turn offs can become non-issues.

The environment definitely has an impact on attractiveness.

Yes, but what does that have to do with insulting the person like that? “The only reason I care about her is that I find her pretty.” Seems a mean thing to say.

I’ve had plenty of crushes in my life, but I would never even feel that way about any of them, let alone say it out load if I did. If anything, I’m more tolerant of changes of physical attractiveness in my crushes.

What position is it you need evidence for?

That the OPs statements are based on bad evo psych? I’m afraid that was just a wild conjecture from me, but I would be shocked if there was any quality published works on attraction to long hair that didn’t acknowledge that this is a preference with some specific level of prevalence and not a trait hard wired into every male. That the OP started a thread asking why he stopped being attracted to Perry when she cut her hair shows he doesn’t have a strong evo-psych basis for his later claim that it’s just standard male genetics as well. Unless he was actually asking why she cut her hair when that would make her less attractive to her. That’s a different kettle of fish.

That sexual attraction is a more complex mixture of genetics and culture than the OPs? There my evidence is the history of erotic art and all the people out there who find all sorts of things attractive, and specifically for short hair on women the fact that finding it attractive is not a particularly rare or odd thing.
