Dammit, now how is Elvis going to thwart the evil Guide (version 2) and save the earth? That little loophole is now unexpectedly and horribly closed forever. I met Mr. Adams once at a book signing for the firk Dirk Gently book, and he was a really nice guy. I mourn not only for him, but for Ford, Zaphod, Trillian, and of course Arthur. ---

Are you serious, ITR? Re: the proposed film of HHGTTG. I don’t think a live action film would be possible. If it happens at all, it should, nay, must, be animated. And if it ends up being live action, I hope casting won’t make the same errors that were made in the TV movie. Arthur was all right, and Zaphod was as good as the FX of the time allowed. But Ford is supposed to be a cynical, weatherbeaten traveling journalist, not a chipper, curly-headed elf. And Trillian is supposed to be hot-looking and cool-acting, not a child prostitute. If you’ve seen that rubbish, you’ll know what I’m talking about. ---

I just saw him speak here about a month ago (April 5th–he had been living in the area for a few years, apparently) and he looked perfectly healthy and happy, so I was very surprised this morning. He was speaking on his environmental eco-diversity thing. I’ve just been reading ‘Last Chance to See’-- his book about traveling around the globe catching sight of nearly-extinct animals-- it seems like an ironic title now, as I think I’ve just done the same thing with him. It’s unpleasantly like being drunk. ---

Well, they just found a new graduation speaker at the last minute. I actually wasn’t going to stay around for the speech, because I need to leave early tomorrow morning to meet my grandparents, but he was planning to speak here. He was also going to give autographs afterwards. ---

I’m so out of it. In my earlier post, I forgot the word “is”, and then I made an addendum telling you to insert the word “in” into the post. This is merely a sign of how dreadful I feel. I feel in some ways like I lost a second father. Right now, I would depress the hell out of Marvin himself. Such a funny, zany man who put so much happiness in my life (as well as others’ lives). I’d never thought that the mention of his name would make me feel so much sadness. So long, Mr. Adams. And thanks for all the laughs. Damn. I’m so sad.
