So, my Ancestry DNA results are in........

I was interested by the 1-2% of Amerindian material in my genome, according to every single admixture calculator on GEDMatch. I came across this article, which basically confirms my own suspicions about it: people with Germanic heritage are likely seeing these results due to common ancestors between Amerindians and the Huns & Magyars: Finding Native American Ethnic Results in Germanic People | DNAeXplained – Genetic Genealogy

Yeah, people are going to reference what they know, and they know the local Indian tribes. I never heard of the Ohlone until I moved to CA, but every school kid here learns about them.

I had to submit a retest for Ancestry.com, since apparently I have no DNA to test.

I am anticipating English, Scottish, French and perhaps some Russian, based on family history. Mom’s side is solid British Isles and has been solidly traced back to the late 1400s.

No native American on my mother’s side. My brother refuses to have his blood tested and have not found anyone else to do it.

From Ancestry

My mother’s
62% Great Britain
21% European West
8% Scandinavian, surprised me

2%, Europe east, European Jewish and Ireland/Scotland/Wales-my fathers side is more Scottish…if only someone would do it!

Emphasis added. Hey, me too. And in the Americas since at least the 1630s. Maybe we’re, like 10th cousins or something! (I recently found out I’m 10th cousins, twice removed, with GW Bush. But it also made me related to Churchill, Janis Joplin and Gene Roddenberry, so there’s that!)

If you’re British, there’s a very good chance you have Scandinavian ancestors. Those Vikings were all over the place.

I didn’t hear much of the NPR program Fresh Air today, but I heard bits of someone who sent DNA to several companies and got differing results.

This business is really hot right now, and being hot and new means the different companies are trying to differentiate themselves. One of the best ways to do that is to use different algorithms, and then you’re likely to get different results. It would be a lot easier if people hadn’t moved around (and fooled around) as much as they did in the past!

I just heard the last few minutes of it. It was Alex Wagner and her new book is called “Future Face”.

Oh come on, I’m sure if you could go back in time and meet them, they’d be warm and cuddly. Or at least hairy.

And smelly. I’m sure my Neanderthal ancestors (23 & Me) were.

So, the results are saying you have a Mongolian in the woodpile?

No need to time travel 50,000 years into the past. I think you only have to go back one or two hundred years to encounter what we would consider smelly ancestors.

I just got my Ancestry DNA panel this week. It was gifted to me by a friend. Here are my results:

Europe West 46%
Ireland/Scotland/Wales 33%
Europe East 10%
Scandinavia 3%
Europe South 3%
Great Britain 2%
Iberian Peninsula 1%
Finland/Northwest Russia 1%
Africa North <1%

Migrations:
Saint Lawrence River French Settlers

StG

Just got mine back. How boring.

57% Western Europe (That would be the French and German on Dad’s side)
13% Scandinavia (That would be the various raids by the Vikings on…)
12% Irish/Scottish/Welsh
7% Great Britain

They even got the migrations right.

How much Neanderthal DNA did you score?

I just got my test results back today too. There was the expected Ireland/Scotland/Wales and Western Europe making up 80% of my DNA. No Native American… but 8% Southern European. Wasn’t expecting the Southern European. Now I’m wondering if G-G-G Grandma was actually Greek or Albanian or Serbian or something like that instead of Native American. I’m gonna have to get with my cousin the family historian and do some more digging.

If I had any Neanderthal DNA, where would that show? On the regular page with the breakdown?

StG

Might have to do mine through there.

Did it though the NatGeo one a couple of years back. Wasn’t anywhere near as detailed, but I expect that was because of the lower comparison pool at the time.

But I did show something like 2.4% Neandertal and 2.1% Denisovan, the later being surprising.

I have not, but my mother has done this on Ancestry.com; she is entirely white European, 40% UK (southern England), 31% Europe, 18% Scandinavian. So I assume I have that too, but my Dad was Maori, so presumably that would be listed as Polynesian, though I think that traces back further to Malaysia and Asia. I guess I’d have to actually do it to know for sure.

My understanding is that the best modern scholarship indicates that this is the closest representation of the historic Jesus.
