…and they have no clue what’s up with him. Apparently.

His thyroid swelled up like a golf ball over the last 24 hours, and the GP was like…Hospital. Now. Go in at the emergency exit. Not quite “go in an ambulance” territory, but still…

Of course they didn’t want me inside, and I wouldn’t have felt right staying overnight anyway, leaving the kids to fend for themselves.

Apparently there’s bleeding in his throat, and nobody can say why. Quote from latest text update “they’re surprised I can breathe”. I think there’s going to be surgery involved.

This is weird AF, and pretty damn concerning…

Sorry to hear this.

I’m dealing with sick parents at the moment with my dad hospitalized. The Covid precautions add to the stress but they are allowing visitors for admitted patients. When I took him to the ER on Saturday I was not allowed to stay with him.

There’s a weird hyporeality when you are the patient. I’ve been there. You really aren’t as worried as everyone else. I don’t know if it’s a defense mechanism, or just the effect of all your energy going to whatever is wrong with you.

Of course you are going to worry, but when he says he isn’t, you can believe him, and maybe take just a little comfort in the fact that he isn’t suffering emotionally-- it’s not just something he is saying to try to put you at ease.

Anyway, worry as much as you need to, which is to say, whatever you feelings are, they are right. If you are more worried than he is, it’s not wrong.

I’m sorry you have to go through this, and I hope it has a resolution that includes a happy future for you.

Thanks

I’m not much of a worrier generally, and Doctor Google is telling me encouraging things. Like: most thyroid things turn out to be NBD - it’s probably just a benign nodule or something that interfered with a blood vessel somehow, so just chop it out and everything will be fine.

They are doing the chopping thing though. Last update was he was heading for theatre, so I guess his phone and stuff are going to get put away somewhere now and I get the next instalment …some time. It’s 9:30 at night here, so I guess surgery now is the hospitals way of saying ‘yeah, good call on coming in’

Wow. What a kick in the head!

People’s phones are part of them nowdays. I hope hospitals have the ability to charge phones, so people can keep in touch with their loved ones.

Healing thoughts.

My father is in the Cardiac Care Unit at the hospital right now. There are no phones in the rooms (it’s actually more of a glassed in cubicle with a sliding door) but lots and lots of outlets! The old “turn off all cell phones in this area” signs are all gone and they fully expect people to be online. It’s great because I can text him to see if he is awake before I FaceTime him and inadvertently wake him up.

They do. If you happen to arrive without your charger, (it happens) they’ll even try to find someone who can lend you one. Many hospitals have concierge facilities that can lend you one free of charge (no pun intended). 🙂

Whew! Just got text that they let him out after successful chopping. So that’s … mm, six hours start to finish. Remind me to be thankful for doctors, up at all hours (it’s 3am here)

Indeed, I was recently in the hospital with my kid. We went from urgent care, to admission to the small hospital, and then transfer to the big hospital. During the several hour stay in the small hospital they asked if there was anything we needed, and when I told them a USB-C charger and a lightening charger they didn’t look at me weird they just said they’d see what they can do. 10 minutes later we had wires for the devices to get tangled with the tubes in my kid. Really the last thing they want is a kid plugged into lots of machines and no tablet.

Best of luck to everybody. I hope the treatment yours receive is as good as the treatment we received.

I did sleep in the meantime. So that’s good. Not sure if I’m going to now though. 4:30 - not really going back to sleep time. Had weird dreams. Also - kittycat sleeping on my ankles. She’s missing Her Human

Thanks for the kind words
