I am originally from outside of Pittsburgh and more of a Steelers’ fan but I watch a little Buckeyes. I am not a major fan though. This is gonna be a pretty good year though for them. We’ll see.
One thing about Columbus, it is a very livable city.
I live in deepest, darkest suburbia* (where the coyotes howl and bring down the occasional deer), so my perspective is a little different.
On the positive side, there is excellent barbecue available (City Barbecue), OK Mexican food and lots of other quality restaurant choices. Traffic isn’t bad from my standpoint (I live 10 minutes away from work); one revolting aspect if you drive I-270 (the loop road around Columbus) is that it was designed so that exit lanes frequently intersect on-ramp traffic, which is insane.
OSU and its saintly President Gee (who knows better than to challenge the football coach) dominate local news, sometimes to the point of nausea (the nausea becomes more intense if you’re not a Buckeye fan). The hockey team exists to sell off its few decent players every spring in exchange for draft choices who mostly disappear into obscurity. The triple-A baseball team plays in a nice new park and recently has been very good. Some people go to Crew soccer games.
I grow a fantastic subtropical garden, and the air quality is pretty good. Sometimes the migrating vultures stop over on their way to Hinckley, Ohio. And as others have noted, Columbus is fairly close to other cities when you need to make a getaway.**
*I talk to my neighbors, but fortunately they are not crammed in on me from all sides.
**I have found that when you are checking out job possibilities, it’s a solid indicator of potential trouble when the job description emphasizes how many flights there are daily to more attractive places.
***It’s telling when the best-known song about the city is “Goodbye, Columbus”.
I can’t really say much that hasn’t already been said. Everyone is complaining about the traffic, but I’ve been to Jacksonville and Charlotte and both cities are MUCH worse in terms of traffic than Columbus is. I generally don’t have too awful of a time on my commutes.
Restaurant scene is great and growing by the minute. Someone upthread mentioned El Arepazo–their original downtown restaurant is a hole-in-the-wall gem of a place. There are really a ton of great places to eat at any price point here.
I assume from your username that you’re in the legal field. It can be pretty saturated here–there are two law schools pumping out more graduates than the city can support.
I’d also be up for a Columbus Dopefest. And if anyone is interested in playing bar trivia, I have a good team going Wednesday nights.
Mmm, City Barbecue. We have those in Cincy, too. Which reminds me, I should check… oh, good, Skyline has locations there. How I neglected to research this vital issue before even considering the town boggles the mind. And yeah, I do believe that’s what I disliked about the highways.
I live 40 miles south of Columbus. I spent the first 46 years of my life in Baltimore, MD. Columbus has enough big city amenities to satisfy my needs. The restaurants and other cultural things have already been mentioned. In addition, I appreciate the music venues that Columbus has. The Schottenstein Center and Nationwide Arena are big enough to attract big national tours like Springsteen, and the beautiful old theaters downtown bring in acts like John Prine and Alison Krauss. Traffic, compared to Baltimore, is trivial.
They bought a huge section of the March issue of Delta’s in-flight magazine; lots of pictures, articles, and ads for Columbus Ohio. Maybe somebody can snag you a copy.
Which company runs the bar trivia you play? I’m in Cincinnati and we play Last Call 3-4 times a week. Maybe we could make it up there one night, or vice versa.
Regarding the OP (since I do a fair bit of appraisal review in Columbus): They have Graeters! I really like the Upper Arlington area, but it may be too close to OSU for your comfort. The New Albany area is everything I hate about modern suburbia - a preplanned, sterile and relatively expensive area. If you must have a suburb - Worthington, Dublin, Hilliard, and (farther out) Delaware all have nice sections, although they all have cookie-cutter subdivisions too.
PS: Drain Bead, what time and where? I’m not usually free during the week but if it’s later in the evening, I could maybe occasionally make it. You can PM me if you don’t want to post it in the thread.
I forgot to mention earlier that Columbus has a great public radio station whose signal is quite clear even down south where I live. It is WCBE. They have a great lineup of national shows and wonderful local shows.
I’ve never lived in Columbus, but I came in to mention this, in case LawMonkey is into gaming at all.
Origins is one of the biggest gaming cons in the U.S. They offer a ton of board games (as noted), plus wargames, card games, role-playing games, etc., etc. I’ve attended it for 7 or 8 years now; their organization has never seemed to be great (web site is often a little inscrutable, and pre-registration for events seems to happen closer to the con date every year), but it’s a well-run convention otherwise. This year, it’ll be on June 12-16.
I have a friend who is a lawyer in Columbus and all of her friends in Columbus seem to be lawyers too. So if you’re in your 20s - 40s and think you’re kinda cool, I can hook you two up to be Columbus lawyer buddies
If you’re super old or just not cool, then I dunno, I don’t want to hook her up with someone who’s lame
