This hijack started because I described Snyder as someone who loves superheroes. Which he does - whatever his merits as a filmmaker - which I agree are limited, at best - he’s very clearly into this stuff. Maybe too into it - he strikes me as the sort of guy who has really, _really_ strong opinions about whether comic books are literature, and his films’ plodding self-importance seem like attempts to demonstrate it. They’re like a pastiche of '90s comics grimdark and the Cliff’s Notes to a Thomas Hardy novel. That’s different from “understanding” it, though. I don’t generally hold to the concept of “wrong” interpretations of a work of art, but Snyder is remarkably consistent in coming away with takes on comic characters that are almost 180 degrees from my own take on them. ---

The HBO series showed that the octopus thing could be incorporated into a compelling, exciting, culturally relevant format that still had all the fun and silliness of a superhero story. I won’t quibble with his choice to replace it, but the movie as a whole had the feel of something that was trying to be faithful to the source but losing all the spirit of it. ---

One could buy that Adrian Veidt as portrayed by Jeremy Irons might come up with the octopus idea. Adrian Veidt as portrayed Matthew Goode didn’t give one that impression. ---

Hey, I said he’s a far better comic artist than Snyder is a comic book director/writer. I stand by that. Snyder is worse than a complete incompetent, because he actually has some talent, and has all the pieces necessary to make a good film. He’s just kinda empty. ---
