So that happened... Whedon's “history of creating toxic and hostile work environments”

And is making these shows was pedophile grooming, what does it say about people who watched them?

There was an entire episode of The Big bang Theory where every guy on the cast acted all shy, flustered, flushed and blushed on meeting Summer Glau on a train.

So, what kind of Pedophiles watched The Big Bang Theory then?

( She was 24-25 when she filmed Serenity. #NotPedophilesHereByALongShot )

The way I see it the best case scenario, that Whedon is a huge asshole, is probably the most likely explanation.

Whedon has, for the vast majority of his whole life, been the most creative, quickest witted person in the room. Of course he’s a huge arrogant prick.

I have watched many of his shows. None of them were children’s entertainment.

That’s pretty much my take on things, barring further info.

When JW filmed Much Ado in his home, w/ mostly Angel alums - my understanding was that the actors “enjoyed” doing it. That it was a collegial atmosphere. Or was it just a paying gig? Or did he get his perv out of the way w/ Buffy?

CAVEAT: I’m personally leaning towards believing the accusations against Joss Whedon, but I’m not entirely sure.

From what I’ve read, there’s no indication Whedon was a “perv.” Michelle Trachtenberg has made a cryptic claim about a supposed rule on the set that Whedon was not to be left alone in a room with her, but we don’t know why, and at least one cast-mate, Anthony Head, was apparently unaware of the situation. Ray Fisher has made statements (I’m not aware of any details) about a hostile and toxic work environment, but not even a hint that I’m aware of of anything “perverted”.

Charisma Carpenter has, I believe, made by far the most detailed accusations. She certainly alleges sexual discrimination, but not as far as I can tell, sexual harassment. Her allegations seem consistent with a bullying, control freak, general-purpose asshole, who was upset with her for getting pregnant without his permission and “ruining” his show. She also said that he played favorites, and got his actors to compete against each other for his favor.

That all seems consistent with a gang of his “favorites” getting together for a fun project. The actors involved, his “favorites”, might have genuinely gotten along with him and enjoyed the experience. Even if some of them weren’t actually enthusiastic about it, it’s consistent with the accusations against him that they might have been afraid to refuse his “friendly” offer to join him on a “fun” project, or publicly contradict the company line.

What’s more likely is that the people who worked on that project were never subject to his abusive behavior. Abusers choose their victims carefully, and powerful abusers especially often have the luxury of choosing the circumstances in which they behave abusively. Remember, Anthony Head said he wasn’t witness to it.

And considering what Ray Fisher has said, I don’t think it makes sense to boil it down to Whedon’s being a “perve.” It’s probably a lot more complicated than that.

Thanks. And apologies for abbreviating asshole to perv. The fact that even assholes have friends doesn’t excuse their behavior to others.

Maybe I missed something but the closest I’ve seen to sexual misconduct allegations was from his ex-wife who claimed he had several affairs with women on shows he worked on. Everything I’ve seen points to him being a colossal asshole and control freak. At this point with everyone supporting each other in statements I would think that anything more pervy would have come out by now.

Sorry, legally children but “young adult” category I guess you mean?

What do you mean?

No, that’s not what I meant. Buffy was initially aimed at a teenaged demographic, but always had adult fans as well, and in later seasons deals with decidedly adult themes. Angel doesn’t really have much in the way of teenaged characters at all (well, there was one notable exception, and he was awful). Firefly and Dollhouse were similarly designed for adults every bit as much as other science fiction shows are designed for adults.

The idea that his shows were designed for children, and that he was behaving similarly “to the grooming predator” is just absurd.

It’s fine if adults also enjoyed his works, I am not knocking people liking what they find joy in.

He wrote and directed the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero films The Avengers (2012) and its sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), and also co-wrote the script for the DC Extended Universe superhero film Justice League (2017). He also served as director for Justice League on re-shoots, replacing Zack Snyder.

But he has worked heavily in pure children’s areas.

If you believe that “superhero” movies are purely the providence of children’s entertainment in 21st-century America, I don’t even know what to tell you. You’re simply and uncontrovertibly mistaken on this matter.

I think you missed the memo, Superhero movies aren’t just for kids. In fact several are R rated so not for kids.

Pure children’s areas? Not one of those is accurately described as “children’s entertainment.”

I just mean in terms of plot, content, dialogue etc. For example Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are two movies I watched that clearly were meant for lower age teenagers which is fine. But that’s the OLDEST demographic these movies are aimed at.

It’s fine if adults also enjoy, I just mean objectively they are children’s entertainment.

The R rating is to attract children who find it edgy and adult, like with smoking.

You don’t need to clarify what you mean, that’s perfectly clear. What you mean is wrong.

Not the marketing, or the needs of an audience, I mean the actual content with the superheros to save the day and the simple, shallow emotional and moral world.

It’s fine for kids and even adults to enjoy.
