I didn’t get the “salty” description, but I guess that’s because I’m from the country of “There’s no such thing as too much salt, too much garlic, or too many onions.” I’m the kind who likes an onion sandwich with some tuna and mayonnaise in it. I thought I might like it because I love spicy and salty and garlicky and I hate bland. I put soy sauce on stir fry and stuff and I must say I don’t get that comparison either. But, I guess it’s just me. My taste buds kept saying, “You’ve had this vitamin in your mouth too long! It’s melting!” Maybe I’ll give it a second chance someday. Maybe it has to grow on you. ---

The secret is not to use too much. On a slice of buttered toast you just need the equivalent of about half of a teaspoon (or even less) spread very thinly. ---

I have to revise my earlier hit on Vegemite. It was actually the syrupy Marmite I was trying. What’s sodium content of Marmite? Or should that be “What’s the Marmite content of that sodium?” ---

So, which should a person try first, Vegemite or Marmite? And does it matter if it’s the US version or another one? ---

Vegemite, but I am an Aussie! The US version comes from the same factory as the Australian one so should be the same. It is a strong taste but most australians eat it from babyhood. ---

I can only easily get marmite where I live, but I wouldn’t eat the stuff on buttered toast just like that. I love it on some toast with mature Gouda cheese, though. And on wraps/pancakes with stir fried veggies and cheese. ---

I wasn’t brought up on the stuff, but I had a friend from Austrailia send me some and I was hooked. I buy it whenever I can find it. You definitely want to spread it on real thing…although at this point I could sit in front of the TV and eat it out of the jar with a spoon. I love it. In fact, I’m going to go have some now. ---

Tastes exactly like what it is: toe-jam - harvested from the feet of lepers, smeared onto testicles, then melted off jock straps and poured into a jar. Goes well with a glass of curdled milk. You have your choice of eating Vegemite, or giving away state secrets. ---

I like Vegemite. To me it tastes like a concentrated soy sauce. It also tastes less salty than Marmite but that could be my imagination. I like it mixed with a cream cheese on saltines, although toast works as well. ---

I am saddened by the negativity directed towards this black yeasty delight. If you can’t handle it on bread/toast/off a spoon, you could try it in a stew or something similar. This is common practice for some older Aussies. The flavour is subtler this way… Re: Vegemite - Marmite - Promite, I think they’re all completely different. To me, saying one tastes like the other is like saying butter tastes like margarine. Vegemite is my personal favourite, hands down. ---
