So was What_Exit correct here?

BEST rewrite of my OP I’ve seen yet. Just needs to add
I think what you really wanted to ask was, “Who do you want to vote for?” not including Biden or Trump, . . .

That’s the benefit of being a Professional Nitpicker*.

*That’s actually a real part of my job - reading things, and determining if there’s any way at all it can be read in the wrong way, and then trying to fix that ambiguity.

And realizing that, I did post that I was looking for specific names to clarify what I was looking for in the thread.
However by that time @What_Exit had decided that the premise (even as clarified) was not going to be supported by the mods.

Once an OP is out there, with responses it is very hard to get it to a different track.

Your Op was poorly worded for your goal and there was no good reason to try and ride it to fix it.

I gave you the choice to leave it open or close it, but I wasn’t go to waste time with your revision.

That would have probably led to modnotes or worse.

Now, please stop @'ing me.

I’ve spent enough time on this .

I think you can assume that anytime you’re only 6 posts into your thread and you’re already starting a post off with, “Not to junior mod my own thread…”, it’s going to be a problem thread.

Clearly, there was confusion over what you believed you were asking for and what posters thought you were asking for. My advice is to learn from the experience and move on.

BeepKillBeep, What_Exit and Procustus literally used “any Democrat” and several people used the phrase “whoever the Dem candidate is” which is semantically equal when Biden is excluded.

I’m not even sure that any of the alternate wordings suggested here would have made for a better thread. It’s a year before the primaries. We have minimal information on anything: who would win, who would carry out policies best, who would be the best campaigner, who would turn off the most people from voting. Might as well say “here’s a menu, what do you want to order in a year?” Some people could make a choice today, but most answers would be meaningless.

I wasn’t talking about @Saint_Cad’s original thread; I was talking about @BeepKillBeep’s second attempt at the topic, which, I had thought, was what @Saint_Cad was referring to with:

In that thread, no poster (so far) has replied with anything like “Any Dem” or “Biden.”

I stand corrected. I missed the connection,

I will note that the reworded thread is going exactly the way I predicted.

Is there something about @ing that I am not aware of? Doesn’t it merely pull up names of people already in the thread. I just do it because I see everyone else do it and I thought I was doing something wrong by not using @ when referring to someone who has responded in the thread.

Which is why I was already thinking of asking a mod to close it if it continued along the same path after my “junior modding”. And as I posted in the thread I agreed with the closure. The reason for this thread is that I feel atWhat_exit has made some questionable mod decisions in the past re: closure and even though I agree with the ultimate decision the way he put his reasoning just left me unsatisfied so I came here to get some perspective. In all honesty I felt the responses were based on people not reading for comprehension rather “Voting thread? Any Dem! Never Pub!”
but based on the feedback here, maybe the OP did suffer from a bit of “I know what I’m trying to say.”

But what bothers me more is what atWhat_Exit just wrote I have to ask is there some issue he has with me? Is he having a bad day? The verbiage he uses seems personal? unprofessional? Not sure exactly but it certainly tells me that I’m worthless for (apparently poorly) trying to contribute an idea to this site for discussion.

Now as a mod, your guideline is untenable. It means nothing and will not be enforced.
there was no good reason to try and ride it to fix it.
but I wasn’t go to waste time with your revision.
I’ve spent enough time on this .

I mean when the mods are “Fuck your attempt to contribute.” then why even be here anymore.

I have a suggestion for a major rewrite that might get at more interesting answers:

If you are inclined to vote for a Democrat, which Democrat would you like to be nominated if Biden doesn’t run? If you are inclined to vote for a Republican which Republican would you like to see nominated if Trump doesn’t run? If you are inclined to vote for a third party, who would you like to see (other than Biden or Trump) running on which ticket?

It sends them a notification.

Oh, did not know that.

I thought the question was very clear. To me who means a person. The OP even had peoples names. The answer on the ballot to the question “You can make it a write-in vote” is not “Any Dem”. That’s one sure way of not voting.
I hadn’t seen the original question posted until I saw this thread. I’m not political savvy so I wouldn’t know who else there is, but I was curious what names would come up.

Seventeen minutes. Ten, if you discount the first (correct) response. Apparently not enough time to have everyone understand the question correctly.

I agree, he really needs to get his SMDB pay docked!

I think you have a problem with me as the OP of this thread misrepresents what happens. “Is the only solution to close the thread?” doesn’t represent the reality.

I don’t really care about you one way or another. I have no beef with you. I vaguely know who you are on the SDMB at least and that is all. I’m not even sure why you think I would have a beef with you. I don’t recall you being a troublesome poster. If you did something wrong I would check your profile to see if you have drawn flags and warnings.

You wrote a bad OP. I informed you I would not be enforcing your clarification. I probably should have added it was too late to fix your thread.
I gave you the choice to close and you said close and I closed it. If you didn’t say close it, it would be open and most people would probably still be posting some version of “any Dem”.

I see Exapno_Mapcase explained the @'ing issue.

Are we good or is there something else? I have a little free time again.

Damn, another day’s pay docked.

Few points of data, you have no Warnings since Discourse at least. So to me a clean record. I see a lot of flags on you where I rejected the idea there was a problem with your post and a few where you flagged your own posts for some sort of fix and I fixed them.

So based on the little bit of data, I clearly have no issue with you.

Excellent advice for 98% of the problems you may encounter.
