So, what do you do with your kids while you work?

Gack! $400 a month for 2 frickin days? I was planning on having kids in a couple of years…

Ok, I’ve another idea for you. Look around for something like Kiddie Kab Service. I found her by a flyer from the school on a parents night, but she also had a sign on the vehicle with name and number.

I used a service like this when TeenSthrnAccent was in the fifth grade. Around here it’s a mom with a suburban who for a fee will pick up and deliver your child(ren) to lessons or home or where ever you specify. He was attending a charter school primarily for gifted kids, but not necessarily gifted in everything. The school was not the nearest school to our home. It was nearer my work. (He for example is qifted in math and sciences and struggled to stay on level in language arts.) With charter schools of course a condition of acceptance is that you provide your childs transportation as there is no district bus service. The Kiddie Kab service would pick him up and take him to soccer Tues. and Thurs. and to home on Mon. and Wed. and to music on Fri. You fill out a form for each day of the week, where the child needs to go. She did not like changes to the routine because she would set up a route and of course was trying to get kids to lessons by certain times.

There were of course the usual forms and stuff you would have to complete for a regular day care and a form for each weekday that said where the child needs to go on Mon, or Tuesday or whatever. Even if the child went the same place each day she was organized in such a way as you had to have a form for each day of the week. This worked really well for us as he was capable of staying alone for two hours a couple of days a week. In fact preferred it to an after care setting where it was too difficult to complete homework with the distraction of other kids. The other days he could get to soccer or lessons and I would pick him up from there. This was six years ago, and we used her only for after school but back then it was only $25. and it was a good solution for us at that time.

I am one of the friendly neighborhood moms that looks after kids in my home both before and after school. I am not a licensed daycare nor do I wish to be. I don’t charge much and I don’t take more kids than I can handle which is about 5.

I am selective about the kids I do watch- I want to know the parents well and the kids must be (relatively  ) well behaved (at least not disruptive or problematic) and of similar ages and/or abilities as my own kids. I know I wouldn’t feel entirely comfortable leaving my kids with someone which is why knowing the families is important to me.

I want the kids I watch to feel like I am just their friend’s mom and not a daycare. We play games, bake goodies, have playground and library days (we walk), and I help with stuff like science fair projects or other special events things, but I don’t help with homework.

I want my kids to feel they are simply having friends over.

I do it because I want to be home with my kids (as opposed to either making a profit or paying for daycare myself). I charge enough to provide good quality snacks and entertainments and supplement my income a little. I actually have a part time job as a nurse.

This has worked for our family.
