The problem is, I don’t think Netflix has much say on what streams and what doesn’t. They are very much at the mercy of the studios, who in turn don’t have a freak’n clue and still seem opposed to digital content.
I just got the email from Netflix about this a few minutes ago. I dropped back to the streaming only, as the DVDs I get from then tend to sit next to the TV for a couple weeks, get watched, then sit there another couple of weeks before getting returned.
If they don’t massively up the streaming service in the next few months I might just drop it. I know it’s only 8 bucks a month but I don’t really use it that much anyway.
Me too - you’re not alone. I mean, I do like streaming, but they don’t really have that much of what I like on Instant, and I can give it up without hurting too much.
We’ll drop to streaming only, and then as soon as I’ve had my fill of Star Trek streaming, we’ll probably drop it entirely.
I think this is probably a bad decision on Netflix’s part. The streaming selection just isn’t good enough to justify the cost.
I think we’ll probably dump it entirely. Too bad, we do use the streaming and the dvd’s both, but that’s a big jump in price.
Maybe Blockbuster should have kept all their stores open for a few more months…who knows how all this will shake out.
Wow, that’s a huge increase. I will have to consider quitting as well.
I won’t do streaming exclusively until they get captions as an option.
My cost (3 DVD, unlimited streaming, blu-ray) is going up between $2 and $3. That yearly cost increase is less than what I typically “waste” in a week (impulse buys, eating out when I could easily have gone home for a meal, etc.) In fact the total outlay to Netflix falls for a month is less than that week’s “waste”.
Bottom line is that they won’t lose me due to small price increases, but does anyone know if the other streaming services support captioning?
They do, at least for some movies…or some devices, I know I’ve watched movies on instant with subtitles on.
So right when the ISPs agree to a ludicrous guilty until proven innocent system, Netflix increases it’s prices. Hmm.
They don’t always work well. Not sure if it’s my computer, but I have watched two movies recently that the captions didn’t work. One, they got all jumbled and didn’t make any sense, the other didn’t work at all. The movies stream just fine, though.
I don’t know what we’ll do. We’re currently at 1 DVD at a time plus instant viewing. I had considered going up to 3 at a time because some of the series I want to watch are not on instant yet.
It’s a huge jump up in price to keep getting 1 at a time. So in any case we won’t stay at that. It’s just a matter of bumping up to 3 at a time or dropping discs altogether.
I don’t use streaming (DSL, ancient monitor, not hooked up to my TV), so will be saving money. I’m happy.
Back when I used Netflix, none of my computers at the time could even handle the streaming (it uses Microsoft Silverlight, and therefore has much higher system requirements for Mac than for Windows). So if they had made this change while I still used it, it would have benefitted me.
I ended up depleting my list of things I wanted to see, though, so I’m waiting for a few years for that list to repopulate now.
Since signing up for streaming early this year we get a physical DVD only about every 5 weeks, so we will cancel the DVD service and just use streaming. Yes, there are many things not yet available on streaming, but we have never had a problem finding plenty of stuff to watch.
I just went ahead and cancelled my disc service. Amusingly enough, I got the email about the new rates right after I got my cancellation confirmation.
I still haven’t gotten the email. I am on the two disc at a time (plus streaming) and it’s IIRC $16.20/month. Is the price going up for me too?
Yes. Basically, they are separating streaming into its own plan, which costs $7.99. Then for DVDs the 1-disc plan is $7.99, the 2-disc plan is $11.99. So for 2 discs plus streaming, it will be $19.98, possibly plus some taxes/fees.
Heh. I just now got the email and came in here to post that but you beat me to it.
Thanks for the help though.
Really? That still seems like a bargain to me - but we cycle through 3-4 discs a month.
We’ll keep both, because $8 per is worth it to us. I’m surprised at how many are outraged at this - Netflix has changed how and what I watch in a good way, and I have no problem paying a little extra for it
I’m still hemming and hawing over what to do. In the end I get the feeling I’ll just leave things the way they are so I can still get my blu-rays but I’ll try to watch more then 1 or 2 of them a month. The alternative I think is to drop the DVD service, stick with streaming and hop over to VUDU to replace the DVDs. They stream at BD quality, have a better selection and new releases much sooner then Netflix.
Also, with all this talk of prices, let’s not forget the extra $2.00 you pay if you’re getting Blu-rays movies.
