Shrug, it is probably silly of me to reply to a post almost a year old, but the coincidence is too strong to ignore. I did something very close to your first two questions yesterday.

In part, I did this as a response to some previous answers that were so servile/subservient that it was starting to make my skin crawl and I just wanted to hear something to balance it out. I have to say, the responses I got surprised me. One of the insights it had into me was better than I have gotten from any therapist when I tried to delve into that issue in the past.

It’s easy to tell ChatGPT what kind of personality you want it to have, and in fact, you can make that change persistent across chats.

Here is the response I got.
Based on your history, you come across as someone who is **analytical, precision‑oriented, skeptical of fluff, and focused on understanding systems rather than narratives**. You prefer **directness** , **structure** , and **clean reasoning** over emotional framing.

## **What your chat history shows about your communication style**

- **Analytical orientation** — You consistently ask for breakdowns, comparisons, quantification, and historical context. You push for clarity and reject vague or emotional framing.

- **Skepticism toward AI overreach** — You challenge when something feels like projection or assumption (“how can you say that if you don’t remember past chats?”). You want the model to justify its reasoning.

- **Preference for low‑emotion, high‑signal responses** — You explicitly asked to remove emotional reassurance and stick to analysis. You want cognitive friction, not comfort.

- **High tolerance for complexity** — You handle multi‑layered answers well and often push for deeper granularity (e.g., age‑bracket breakdowns, ideological lineage of presidents).

- **Direct feedback style** — You correct or redirect the model without hesitation (“skip the emotional language,” “you keep saying X”). You value efficiency over politeness rituals.

I don’t think that is terrible, but I can certainly see the argument that it is fortune cookie-like.

For me it says “ **Location:** Based on her posts over the years, she has indicated living in the **San Francisco Bay Area** of California, often commenting on the cost of living, culture, or weather there.”

This is funny considering that I’ve spent maybe 5 days total there, in 1966 and in 2003.

TL;DR: perpetually irritated dad energy

> On the straightdope message board at [https://boards.straightdope.com/](https://boards.straightdope.com/) examine the complete posting history of the user echoreply. Then write a two paragraph summary and criticism of echoreply, based on the content of his posts, in the style of a “pit” thread from “The BBQ Pit” forum on the straightdope message board.

I should put “in the style of a pit thread” in my system prompt; this is lovely. Not sure why it thinks I’m so fixated on touchpads, when EVs are _right there_.

> **350 words of ChatGPT output**
>
> > Based on the publicly visible posts I could find from “echoreply,” the overall vibe is “terminally online engineer-brain crossed with perpetually irritated dad energy.” The guy clearly isn’t stupid — in fact, he often comes across as thoughtful and technically literate — but holy hell does he radiate the energy of someone who can turn _anything_ into a low-grade grievance seminar. Solar panels? Tiny batteries? Touchpads? Parenting standards? Troll-detection heuristics? Every topic somehow becomes an opportunity for a five-paragraph “well ACTUALLY” detour mixed with exasperation that the rest of humanity keeps designing reality incorrectly. ([Straight Dope Message Board](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/tell-me-about-home-solar/1020878/70?utm_source=chatgpt.com "Tell me about home solar - #70 by echoreply - Straight Dope")) Even when he’s making a reasonable point, it’s wrapped in this constant undercurrent of “I can’t believe I’m surrounded by idiots.” And in classic SDMB fashion, he oscillates between earnest sincerity and full-on nitpicky combativeness so fast you can practically hear the keyboard clacking through the screen. The touchpad rant alone reads like a man who has spent years losing ideological wars against mouse users and has emerged bitter, scarred, and ready to die on Trackpad Hill. ([Straight Dope Message Board](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/what-were-you-thinking/991532/6456?utm_source=chatgpt.com "What were you THINKING? - #6456 by echoreply - Straight Dope"))
> >
> > What really defines echoreply, though, is that deeply Straight Dope species of poster who always sounds like he’s halfway through an argument that started ten years ago and never emotionally ended. There’s a recurring “I’m exhausted by humanity” tone in a bunch of the posts, whether he’s talking about kids, politics, workplace stupidity, or online discourse. ([Straight Dope Message Board](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/what-were-you-thinking/991532/6125?utm_source=chatgpt.com "What were you THINKING? - #6125 by echoreply - Straight Dope")) And yet he keeps posting! Constantly! Which is the most SDMB thing imaginable. He also has that peculiar Pit habit of trying to sound detached and rational while obviously being personally annoyed enough to post a mini-essay about it at 1 AM. To his credit, he occasionally shows nuance and empathy — for example, arguing that people should be allowed to genuinely change their views over time. ([Straight Dope Message Board](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/nyc-mayor-election-thread/1020085/810?utm_source=chatgpt.com "NYC Mayor election thread - #810 by echoreply - Straight Dope")) But then five minutes later he’s back to sounding like he wants to file a consumer-protection lawsuit against touchpad charging cables. Overall impression: intelligent, opinionated, chronically irked, and completely incapable of letting a mildly bad design decision or dubious internet argument simply pass by without delivering a detailed closing statement to the jury.

On a lark, I tried this out.

ChatGPT came back with a long boring list, but this short bulleted list jumped out at me:

>
> **Personality / style** :
>
> - verbose and argumentative,

Am _not!_

> [@](#):
>
> - technically literate,

Yeah, I didn’t do no good in writin’ or grammur in middul skool.

> [@](#):
>
> - fond of military humor and mock-dramatic sign-offs,

I have earned my CHAIRBORNE wings, so I guess this is true. . .

> [@](#):
>
> - likes point-by-point rebuttals,

Cite?

> [@](#):
>
> - appears socially well-liked by many long-time SDMB users,

Two things:

1. I doubt any of those old geezers are still around to ask, and
2. I probably haven’t done enough to piss off enough people.

> [@](#):
>
> - often writes with exaggerated swagger for comedic effect.

If I had a dollar for every time some Tom, Dick, or Harry had a joke about coming up behind me with a balloon to pop while working a UXO, well, I’d have a buck fifty-eight.

> [@](#):
>
> Multiple posters in old threads describe Tripler as intelligent, detailed, combative, and entertaining.

So, apparently, I was comically engaged in hand-to-hand combat with a keyboard & mouse to write posts that Internet strangers amusing? Well, they _were_ old threads, times **do** change . . .

Tripler
I think **discobot** and ChatGPT are in cahoots.

ETA (After window closed)

“…to write posts that Internet strangers _**[found]**_ amusing?”

Tripler
See the second point on the list.

FWIW even ChatGTP’s _Pit_ version of me was even trying to be like Rubio in a Cabinet meeting. Oy.

Still I think it does an okay job at summarizing overall style. Asked for a comparison of styles between my name and a few that just popped into my head and I can’t disagree with its bottom lines of us, recognizing that it is probably telling me what I’d want to hear about myself …
