> The trailer for _Shawshank Redemption_, with Morgan Freeman voiceover, and the convict feeding a bird hidden in his pocket, and shots of the star, Tim Robbins, made me sure the movie was entirely a " all imprisonment is unfair" type movie. That is part of the movie, but not all of it. And I wouldn’t have avoided the film if they just said … “Stephen King wrote a story. It doesn’t contain the supernatural. We made it into a movie.”

Before Shawshank, Stephen King was box office poison.

Misery, Carrie, Stand By Me, Pet Semetary, Children of the Corn, Cujo and the Shining all came out before Shawshank. Granted he had some flops to, but he was very far from being “box office poison”. If anything, post Shawshank movies made from his works have been a lot more hit and miss then those before.

(and Shawshank itself was actually something of a flop, at least as measured by the boxoffice take)
