I was just thinking about this, we’ve been together nearly 25 years. We danced to 10,000 Maniacs Because the Night. I love Natalie Merchant’s voice. At the time & even looking back on it, I think it was a very unconventional choice. My other choice wouldn’t have been a top pick either, I don’t think. I would’ve gone with Frampton, Baby, I Love Your Way. What did you dance to? ---

Fields of Gold, by Sting. It was a slow song, neither of us hated it…seemed like a good enough idea. Unfortunately the “first dance” with everybody looking at us felt like hours, so I pulled Mr. Beetle off the floor and sat down in the middle of it. It confused the hell out of the DJ and the guests. Now I hate it. 😁 ---

My first husband wasn’t a dancer, so no dancing at that wedding. My second husband and I danced our first dance to (cliché, I know) Etta James’s _At Last_. In our case, it really was the perfect choice, since it took us a very long time to get on the same continent. Lest you think we were complete fuddy-duddies, our recessional music choice as we left the altar: Lyle Lovett’s _She’s No Lady, She’s My Wife_. We danced out of the chapel. So I guess that was actually our first dance! ---

We eloped, so no reception and no dancing, and my husband doesn’t dance, so it worked out! But if we had gone traditional route, it probably would have been Air Supply _Making Love Out of Nothing At All_. ---

My wife is Tehran-born, so we had a Persian wedding. They don’t have the tradition where everyone sits and watches the husband and wife dance. There’s lots and lots of dancing, but everyone participates. A friend supplied the music at our ceremony, so my wife and I danced down the aisle to “Mairi’s Wedding,” after the ceremony was concluded, played by him on his fiddle. (“Step we gaily, on we go/Heel for heel, and toe for toe …”) At the reception, pretty much every guest was musical in some way, so it turned into a colossal jam session. Lots of great music, and dancing, but nothing that was explicitly a “bride and groom” dance. ---

We chose Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” for our first dance. The DJ played “Harvest” which I recognized was wrong in two notes, and not as danceable, but we had to stay out there for the whole song with everyone watching. Luckily someone had the cassette in their car so we got another chance later. ---
