Maya could go, and it’s about time Rachel Dratch left. About the only thing Chris Parnell is good at these days are his raps - most of his characters are variations on ‘Merv the Perv’, and that’s really tired now. Or, he plays the uptight straight man, which is also old.
Frankly, I think they should try building a new cast around the core of young people they got last year, and let most of the rest go. A new cast made up completely of Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, Jason Sudekis, Kristin Wiig, and a couple of the older cast (Seth Meyers, who I believe is head writer now, and maybe Amy Poehler), and maybe one or two new players. Trim the cast back to seven or eight, revamp the writing staff, and start fresh.
Frankly, I think Tina Fey was overrated, especially the last couple of years. I’ve never been much impressed with her writing. Weekend Update hasn’t been funny for a while, and the sketch writing sometimes delves too much into potty humor. So I’m glad she’s going. I suspect Hader and Samberg’s writing would be much, much funnier.
