Based on the article it sounds to me that she was initially shocked over how much the cloths cost, but then came to terms with it thinking, "Well I guess this is just one of the perks of being a VP candidate. " I do think that at the end she had a pretty good idea of what she was spending, but she was unfamiliar with the situation of having the campaign pick up expenses, she didn’t know what was acceptable. She basically thought she could get whatever for her and her family. When the truth came out that there were limits she followed her political advisers in saying that they were all loans and would be returned, but privately was fuming about having to give back all of the things she thought were legitimately hers as perks from the campaign. I don’t blame her for this, since I think a large majority of people with her lack of experience would do the same thing if presented the same situation. This just displays the naivety of a small town girl plunged in to the world of the bigwigs. There are much more substantive things that this to complain about with regard to Palin. ---

I would believe this if there weren’t already charges of stipend/spending improprieties from her days as governor. ---

It doesn’t say much for the quality of her handlers – that they would buy thousand dollar dresses and expect the campaign to pick up the tab. ---

If they told her specifically to buy three outfits to wear for the convention, why did she go on and buy stuff for everybody, including _luggage_ fer crine out loud? Sarah, that money comes from your own party’s fundraisers, from Republican voters! How much ad time, etc. can you buy with $150,000? I think she got grabby and stupid. If she were the naive, small-town girl who got caught, she would have been terribly embarrassed and would have moved heaven and earth to get those clothes back or to pay for them as quickly and quietly as possible. She wouldn’t have dragged this out for weeks and months like Nancy Reagan and her damned fur coats, whining and complaining and making life hell for the little people in the party who had to follow up on this. It should have been resolved instantly. If it _was_ a misunderstanding, then she is one stubborn, silly goose. “How could you imagine that I could ever do anything wrong? How dare you question my judgment?” I _hate_ that stuff. ---

The thing is, why _didn’t_ she return the clothes? I mean, I recall this being a fairly big deal during the campaign, and refusing to return the clothes- _even if she had every right to keep 'em_- just makes her look bad. It makes her look cheap and greedy. It just fuels the “trash redneck” view some people have of her. And considering how much money she’s made since then, she could’ve wiped this under the rug with one donation- and would’ve seriously improved her public profile. Instead, here we are many months later, still talking about it. It’s mind-boggling. Returning the clothes or donating an equivalent amount of money just seems like a no-brainer, to me. ---

And if anybody ever questions her about anything, it’s always “gotcha journalism” and “the lamestream media” and that kind of nonsense. We had a discussion somewhere about whether she is middle-class or upper-middle-class, or higher, and I understand she came from ordinary circumstances and worked her way up, and I don’t begrudge her that at all. But when she’s making six figures as governor and raked in who knows how much for the book and the TV appearances and is still pretending she lives just like the ordinary folks back home in Wasilla and grabs on to every perk she can and pretends like she’s not a “celebrity”… that’s what makes me grind my teeth. You can’t have it both ways, Sarah. Sometimes “social class” is about how much money you make, and sometimes it’s about… class. ---
