So who look after Obama's kids' security at school?

Ah, thanks for that. I assume you mean George HW Bush, not George W Bush?

It changes with Bush 43. Kind of dumb, IMO, as he is going to be around for a lot more than 10 years. It can always change back, I suppose.

The law changing protection for former Presidents was passed in 1997. Amusingly, Clinton signed the law guaranteeing him protection for life, while his successor was stuck with 10 years. It appears to apply solely to the Pres & spouse, so Chelsea lost her SS in 2001, and Jenna & Barbie lose theirs in two months.

ETA: It makes sense to limit the protection to 10 years. A former President is pretty much guaranteed as lavish a lifestyle as they want for the rest of their lives - if nothing else, they can make $100k-250k a pop making speeches, plus publishing memoirs can get them millions, etc. etc. They can afford their own protection, if they think they still need it.

The last president to get protection for life was Clinton, as the other posters here said, Bush is the first to get the 10-year treatment. I think the lifetime secret service protection was seen as wasteful, and ex-Presidents do tend to live a long time these days. I guess it’s true that GW Bush gets the shaft here, but no matter what president signed the law, that president was probably going to get grandfathered in.

Found it. It’s not much (I was only nine when it came out, so my memory was a bit fuzzy).

So, doing anything in 2019…?

:stuck_out_tongue:

Yes. Prior to the election, I know the secret service guys were outside the school building (per friend-of-a-friend, can’t provide cite). I’d suspect it’s the same now.
