So who WAS Jack the Ripper?

I’ve seen the documentary mentioned by Ticker - it gives the name of the suspect as Francis Tombelty (various spellings of the last name), an American doctor (something of a quack, but nonetheless medically trained) with a notable hatred of women, an interest in collecting anatomical specimens, and who lived in London at the time of the murders, and returned to the States when the police got too close to him - at which time the murders stopped. The programme also noted that he was considered a suspect by the US press, who ran stories on the topic.

Come to that, insofar as he wasn’t famous, but his name turns up repeatedly in the police files, he fits the descrption given by JMS as well.

Hardly conclusive proof, I know, but the documentary makes a fairly convincing case - certainly better than any of the conspiracy theories out there, IMHO.
