So who will actually leave due to banner ads

Next time you get a page time out, or the board is down, just be thankful that the meager resources on hand are spent running ads.

I don’t notice them. I’ve completely adblind to anything on a page (unless it’s a popup). I would think most of dopers would be, too.

I might leave, but it’d be more the principle of the thing. The way TubaDiva answered Noone Special’s question really annoyed me, more than anything else.

I will stay as long as I can block the ads without too much effort and help others block them.

*Just a reminder, for many of us, it is not the ads that are pissing us off, but the ads with sound that is the deal breaker. *

It isn’t about the ads, it’s about TPTB’s attitude (thanks for sticking up for me, Haze!)

If I can’t block them, I’ll leave when my sub is up.

If I can’t block them, and they include any dancing or flashing, I will leave immediately. I barely tolerate free sites that do that (which is granted the majority of them, but I’m not paying for the privilege.)

I’m considering it, partially due to the banner ads. The administration of this board is astoundingly incompetent.

Arguments and complaints about the Admins, and Mods, to me seem to be beside the point of this place. As do the ads - even if I couldn’t block them, I’d stay. Without a good adblocker, 75% of the places I go to on the internet would look like giant billboards, and I don’t go running from them, why would I let them chase me from a place I enjoy?

So I’m a no - I’d stay.

I’ll stay, I mean there are ads in magazines, newspapers, and on cable TV and I pay for all of those. I hardly notice the banner ads at all, especially since I just scroll down to read the messages and it is gone.

I’ll stay. The ads are blocked. If I couldn’t block them, I’d still stay, but I might not visit so often.

I don’t mind ads on boards if the ads are related to the board’s purpose – horror boards have ads for horror books and movies, and I’m fine with those, even the animated ones.

I will also be considering it. I pretty much stopped going to movie theatres when they started showing ads before the main movie. I have an objection to paying to see ads.

I’m another adblocker, so I didn’t even notice. Actually, though, I had made an exception for Google ads, since they’re unobtrusive, sometimes amusing, and (more rarely) useful. So before I saw the ads and even clicked on them, but now I don’t even see anything.

So, I’ll stay. Poor move on their part, however.

Although I use Firefox, I never bothered with adblock. Until now. It is working fine and I’ve gotten rid of the Google ads as well. I really question the decisions of TPTB, but as long as adblock works, meh.

I’ll be staying as $7.50 is less than an hour’s pay but I’m pretty annoyed by it all and will definitely consider leaving if the continuing belligerence towards us continues and/or too many people leave, thus affecting our already dwindling traffic.

I’ll stay. I’ve just installed adblock.

Banner ads don’t bother me too much - unless they have sound. That would cut down on my visits quite a lot.

I’m staying until the absolute bitter end of the SDMB, or until the sun explodes, whichever comes sooner.

I can’t block any further with my current resources, and I have to presume that the ads or the attempt to block them are causing the page hangs I’m having now. If I can’t find a work-around, the board is not worth my time. However, I’m more concerned about how this was handled interpersonally than about the ads themselves (again, assuming I can get the ads themselves to stop).

I won’t check out the SDMB at work anymore, and will visit less in general.

I won’t lie; I am addicted to this place, but the ads do encourage me to find other boards. I’ve been her long enough. And if I do, and if enough people of SDMB- quality find their way to that other board, I’ll be gone. With a LOT of regret, but I will be gone.

They haven’t always done that?

Like I said in the pit thread, so far, I’ve had the same ad, no sound, so animation, but no flashes. The ads don’t so much bother me, they’re easily scrolled past, but if they’re made permanent, I think a good portion of the board’s membership will leave. That’s why I likely won’t be reupping.
