This seems like the perfect thread to make this confession: I’m left-handed. I tried to deny it for years because of all the hatred and viterol directed towards me (The sneers whenever I asked for a pair of left-handed scissors in Art class; the snickers when I threw the ball left-handed in recess), but it’s true. I’m ashamed of my condition. I know it’s a sin: Satan is on the left, just like the Bible says. Besides, if left-handedness wasn’t a Sin, then God would have provided more left-handed friendly things on this world than Toll Booths and Drive Thrus. I try to hide my condition as best as I can, just like Brood suggests. I write right-handed in public, I scratch my crotch _and_ my ass with my right hand only. But, in the dark, I still masturbate with my left hand. ☹ The fear of being labled a Leftist is with me every day. I know I’m immoral and peverted. I just pray that someday I will have the strength to finally cast away my wrong-handedness for good. ---

Remember, Hitler was left-handed and anyone who says otherwise just has an agenda. Since you are capable of being right handed in public, clearly you can learn to be right handed inprivate. Try electro-shock therapy. Everytime you use your left-hand, shock yourself. Also, try aversion therapy. This is where you give yourself a drug to induce nausea. Then you watch film wear people use their left hand. Then you give yourself a drug to counter the effects of the nausea and watch films with right handed people. Soon you will be able to go about using your right hand. Everytime you have the urge to use your left hand, that will be your clue that something is wrong in your life and needs to be fixed. once you fix the problem, the urges to use your left hand will ease. If none of this works, then I vote that you just chop of the hand and eleminate the source of temptation completely. ---

Can I just say that all this arguing about conformity/nonconformity reminds me of the Simpsons episode when John Waters was on? I just keep thinking of Homer’s ever so catchy phrase: “I like my beer cold, my tv loud, and my homosexuals FA-LAMING!” I just like how he pronounces “fa-LAMING!” ---

To be bruatly fair, it isn’t inconsistant to find a natural aspect of human nature immoral. Not very useful, but it is possible. There are quite a few people who find allowing yourself any kind of sexuality immoral. I don’t really like the “It’s not a choice,” response to homosexuality, because the phrasing implies that it would be immoral if you could choose. Most people arn’t arguing that you shouldn’t “be” gay, they’re saying that they want you to supress your homosexual attraction, in the same way that I’m expected to supress my homocidal impulses. The fact that homosexual attraction isn’t distructive and twisting my neighbors head off would be is what most of these people seem to be missing. Or, put annother way, the fact that homosexuality isn’t wrong is the important issue, not weither or not you can select it. That brings us to the whole “desires arn’t moral or immoral, it’s what you do with them” aspect of philosophy, but, as I said, not everyone accepts that, unfortunatly. What has always stunned me is the fact that some people feel they need to get in on the buisness and personal lives of others. I’ve never seen gay people express physical affection in public, except at a gay pride rally or a large gay function associated with gay pride. I’m not opposed to PDAs. All of my boyfriends in the past were and so is my current. I don’t think it should be anything out of the ordinary. I think it is a normal, human expression of love and sharing. Lord knows I see heterosexuals mauling each other in public all over the place and as that is accepted by the masses, it is ok. It is often these same people who get icked out by seeing two men kiss or hug. They feel they have some right that is being infringed by watching two men in love express affection. In some cases they will complain to whatever authority is around, or if not, take matters into their own hands and go gay bashing. The mores of society for the most part annoy me. They codify some behaviour that I find repellant. And others that I think should be the norm, are not. And I have to deal with zealots and homophobes on television and in face to face transactions that would attempt to limit my freedom of movement and expression. I think being gay should be as novel as having green eyes. But, society gives a rat’s ass. I don’t. [ASIDE] Saw matt\_mcl’s pic yesterday on the people of the Straight Dope page.
