[I walked into a social disaster once](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/can-they-really-invite-me-separate-from-my-wife-help-miss-manners/133159/8), a friend’s fancy wedding to which I’d been invited and to which I naturally brought my wife. When I found there was no place setting for her, we just left and went home without saying goodbye to anybody. That was the last time I saw any of those people. I just quietly dropped out that social circle without a word to anybody because the embarrassment was spread all around. They took it for granted I would not bring a +1 because their culture was exclusive. I took it for granted I would bring my +1 because I was used to inclusive culture. I was offended because of their failure to think of my wife, or else their failure to specify that I alone was invited. I was 43 years old and had never heard of inviting somebody while uninviting their spouse.
