I did like Solo, I just thought it was a significant step down from the other 3, which I thought were the best since the original trilogy. ---

I’d put it at something like this: TLJ \>\>\> TFA \>\> R1 \> Solo ---

My main problem was that the film felt… cheap. The sets looked cheap. The costumes looked cheap. The _droids_ looked cheap. The Kessel scenes looked like they were shot in an old Doctor Who rock quarry. And the cimactic fight was in some guy’s living room! I mean, for God’s sake, this is Star Wars! Couldn’t the have found a way to fit a catwalk over a bottomless pit in there? There’s such a thing as standards. Is it so wrong for me to ask for some eye candy in a freaking Star Wars film? ---

Re-watched Solo on Netflix this past weekend. I do like it, better than TLJ, but not better than TFA and definitely not better than R1. But it’s a fun movie (even without any use of the Force). My biggest beef coming out of this weekend viewing: The Maul scene. He just randomly fires up his lightsaber when talking to his underlings? Uh…why? I mean, I get it that the filmmakers probably needed to confirm to many viewers that, yes, this \*is \*Darth Maul, the guy with the double-bladed saber that “died” in TPM, but it just seemed pointless within the scene. If they wanted to have him fire up the old sparky-sword, write a scene for him that doesn’t just make him a hologram on a desk. ---

Solo was my least favorite of the new ones for two reasons 1). I really don’t need to see the backstory for every single doodad that Han ever touched. 1. It is very inconsistent in tone and characterization. The most blatant being L3 being extremely for robots rights, then sarcastically dismissive of robots rights, then converted into believing in robots rights. ---

With a Visual Effects nomination for SOLO, the Star Wars franchise has set a new record for most installments of a series to be Oscar-nominated, with a count of 10. 9 of those received nods or awards for that category (REVENGE OF THE SITH is the only exception), though the last time any SW film won an Oscar was 35 years ago. Strangely, there aren’t individual songs listed in the music section of the Solo credits, so I wasn’t able to confirm it that way.
