If the police agencies comply, there would be no need for the FCC to regulate “broadcast media” since the “broadcast media” wouldn’t know the names either.

If the police stopped releasing names, the shooters would send out emails to all their racist/incel buddies and tell them what they were planning to do. From there the names would spread to reddits and blogs, along with a juicy ‘the FAKE NEWS is trying to Hide the FACTS but We cann’t BE STOPPED!!!’

But the idea that the identity of the assailant is known only to police, and is a well-kept secret to everyone else, is facile. The survivors of the attack may recognize the person, the person may have talked about his plans with friends, or the family/coworkers will know that they haven’t seen John since last night and oh my god did he do this?
Maybe. But at least it wouldn’t be on the 4 channels of “Broadcast Media” that the FCC can control! Luckily, nobody watches CNN or reads newspapers, or surfs the Internet, or anything like that, so nobody would know the names.

Yeah, when I think about implementing gun control the first word that comes to mind is “simple”.

The perpetrators in this situation try to hide their crime because they intend to survive it and don’t want to go to jail - they’re most definitely not interested in seeking fame as a rapist. And when a rape victim wants you to know their name, you hear their name. See the various public accusations of public figures.
It doesn’t seem like comparing this to a situation where the criminals are explicitly asserted as wanting fame for their crimes is going to yield a valid analogy.

I don’t know. I don’t think so. But it’s hard to say “gun control has been tried” if every year the number of guns in the country is going up.
Easy fix for that one: A new law that makes it illegal for mass shooters to release their name before their mass shooting occurs.
