> I think this must be another instance of “Our side does it, so your side must do it too.” For Hillary, not only have single sentences been taken out of context in their paragraph and repeated over and over on the FauxNews-Infowars blogs, but a single clause was taken out of context to reverse meaning completely, with the key word (“if”?) removed before the mindless repetition.

> And we watched long debates featuring Trump. In those, Trump often interrupted the other clowns with brief flatulences — are those the “snippets” you refer to?

Did you expect Hillary would win? Had you convinced yourself that Hillary could not lose? From where did you get your information that allowed you to make your decision? Who lied to you? Should you rethink where you get your political information from?

I expect the media outlets to provide the facts, without their usual biases, spin, half-truths, horseshit, etc… I want to know the Who, What, Why, When, and Where that used to accompany good reporting, and journalism. YMMV.

I expected that Hillary would win because I expected the American electorate to choose competence, and Hillary always appeared competent when answering questions or discussing issues. I didn’t always agree with her answers, but she HAD answers, she knew the names and the statistics, and she demonstrated that she had command of the issues. Now that the election is over, I still believe Hillary is competent, and nothing that has come to light has made me rethink the impressions I formed of her intelligence and work ethic. (My opinion of the American electorate has shifted, but not my opinion of her.) No, I see no need to get my political information from other sources–why should I? Nobody lied to me, and I don’t understand why you think they did.

I also formed an impression of The Donald’s competence, command of the issues, and work ethic, and nothing that has happened post-election has changed that impression. I don’t have any reason to believe anybody lied to me about that, either, because I formed my opinions by watching HIM in interviews and speeches and debates.

Nobody lied when they predicted a Clinton victory. It was a realistic prediction based on polling information. But nobody can know how accurate a prediction is until after the election is over.

Polling information that was finally proven wrong by the election results. :smack:

It was obvious from the post-election look on peoples faces, and the post-election conversations on the internet, that some people were shocked that Hillary had lost. Again. Those people had managed to convince themselves that Hillary couldn’t lose/would win. It just could not happen. Those people should, it’s up to them of course, seriously reconsider how they gather information, and how they weigh the evidence. Or not.

Who convinced them that Hillary couldn’t lose? The Democrat collective? The news media outlet’s claims? Comedians? The DNC spokesmodels? The unvetted polling results? When people are so shocked by the results of an election, it’s because they refused to consider all of the facts.

Sometimes a result is just too terrible to contemplate. Count me as one who couldn’t believe Trump would win. I’m surprised he won any states at all. I don’t know what information I could have gathered that would have made this result more conceivable.

Those are the reasons you voted for Hillary. Which is fine, but doesn’t explain why so many people were shocked, SHOCKED, at the elections results. It’s obvious that many people had absolutely no clue that Hillary would not/could not win.

You say your opinion of the American electorate has shifted. Why did it need to shift? Something has changed the way you think about the American electorate. What were you unaware of before the election? Was it because you were unaware of how all of the American electorate actually felt about the candidates? Were you given the information and decided to ignore it, or weren’t you given the information?

You’ve made it obvious that no information could have prepared you for a Hillary loss. Your mind was made up, or closed, your choice. Hillary must win. Everyone must vote for Hillary. Everyone will vote for Hillary.

Except that they didn’t.

Will you be any more prepared for the next election’s results than you were for the last one?

It’s pretty stupid to dismiss data from real people that have actually met and/or known Trump just because it was posted on a Reddit thread. Many of the people in that thread that spoke well of Trump are New Yorkers, a state that Clinton won by a landslide. Futhermore, many of the people who thought he was a nice guy explicitely stated that they did not agree with his politics.

The truth is that most elected officials on both sides of political aisle are quite likeable.

You don’t seem to realize how badly you’re coming off in this debate.

We’re saying _“We really didn’t believe millions of people would be stupid enough to vote for Donald Trump.”_

And you’re saying _“We sure proved you wrong, didn’t we?”_

Come back in four years. If it turns out that Trump is an acceptable President, then you’ll be vindicated and entitled to gloat.

Absolutely. Given the results this year, _nothing_ could surprise me. I tried to think of someone whose election would be more shocking, and came up blank.

> Several folks have said mostly the same thing, but you distilled it best. I want to amend your statement slightly. IMO it works like this: … he’s a top notch salesman and you can’t do that without \*knowing how to pretend to be \*likable.The key is giving that illusion. Some salesmen are genuinely likeable. Others merely are really good at faking it. That latter crew are the sociopaths who scam little old ladies who still say they love the guy after they’re broke and they know who did it.
>
> Way too many people have a real hard time telling surface behavior from underlying reality. Professional TV packaging certainly makes that even tougher.

I can see that point to some degree as a judgment, I certainly believe some people are more ‘genuine’ than others, and can think of example of completely phony people.

For example I recall buying a car under an employee discount program, I actually worked for a company with a close relationship to one of the car makers and they gave us the real employee deal though we weren’t actually employees. Anyway so for some reason the car salesmen felt they could have an honest discussion in front of me what they really thought of their regular clients, how they ripped them off and the clients stilled loved it etc. But I’m sure they were ‘likable’ to those customers’ faces.

But IMO it’s mainly political opinions soaking through where people are so sure Trump is a phony on that level. I don’t know of any real evidence he isn’t a likable guy personally except for the limiting condition:, which affable extroverts are really, really deep down as ‘likable’ as they seem? You can ‘deconstruct’ anyone’s personality into their pursuit of self interest, or almost anyone.

But again, I don’t even know Trump personally, strikes me as strange when people who also don’t know him (nobody here has claimed so) are so sure what he’s ‘really’ like.

Hahahaha. No, that’s not what I’m saying, but you have no way of knowing that.

If you were shocked at seeing Hillary lose a 2nd time, if you were surprised that so many voters didn’t believe as you do, if you were astounded that the media outlets, the polls, the pundits, and comedians could be so wrong, you might want to rethink where you’ve been getting your information.

OTOH, I like you just the way you are. Don’t change on my account.

FYI - I have no idea if Trump is going to be a good President, a bad President, a great President, or just another asshole like Obama.

What were you unaware of before the election? Was it because you were unaware of how all of the American electorate actually felt about the candidates? I believe that Mr. Trump is intellectually and temperamentally unfit for the office of president. Prior to the election, I believed that the majority of voters were smart enough to figure that out, and would vote for the competent candidate. Obviously, that didn’t happen, so my opinion of the electorate shifted because it was proven wrong.

I was unaware of exactly how many voters don’t CARE that Mr. Trump is intellectually incurious, woefully ignorant, defiantly sexist and racist, dreadfully thin-skinned, and so clearly uninterested in the actual work of being president. They know it, but it doesn’t matter to them, because he made promises. It’s like watching TV programs on Jamaican or Nigerian scammers: your mind knows that people really do fall for these, but you’re still stunned when you hear some man who lost his life savings because he believed he was chosen to help smuggle money out of some African bank. I know people really are that easily duped; I just don’t want to believe it.

Being disappointed that your team lost is one thing. You probably knew that there was some chance that your team might lose. Being disappointed that the other team won is different. That’s usually the behavior of haters.

But this election was different than any modern general election. I was amazed that sooooo many people appeared to be in a state of shock that Hillary lost. I had assumed that they must have had some idea that their candidate could lose. Instead, it appears that they had convinced themselves that Hillary’s win was inevitable. It was as if they had already ordained her HRHOTUS (Her Royal Highness of the United States). They were led to believe that Hillary CAN’T lose, that Hillary WON’T lose. They considered it virtually impossible for Hillary to lose. It’s those people who need to seriously reconsider their data gathering, and political handicapping, skills, or they will be making the same mistake in the future. But it’s their choice.

What the hell are you even talking about?

Most people don’t conduct their own private polling and statistical analysis with respect to how any given candidate will perform. Most just vote their conscience and hope others will do the same.

The fact that roughly half of those who cast their vote decided to cast their lot with the orange buffoon says more about them than any mistaken assumption HRC voters may have made about the inevitability of her winning the election.
