Very true. I’ve had the experience of being genuinely curious about what some forum belligerent meant by some oddly specific insult–but just letting it go because there wasn’t a good option for discovering the answer. I didn’t want to give the belligerent the public stroke of responding in the thread, but I _also_ didn’t want them to be able to say ‘this person harassed me by sending me a pm!’
Meh.
In re the Left versus Right debates that rage: it’s very difficult to find examples of debates that are free of the Straw Man tactic (as with the ‘liberals favor unrestricted immigration’ remarks in the current thread). I doubt it’s even possible to make a list of reasons that The Right Is Bad For The Country or The Left Is Bad For The Country without at least some Straw Men sneaking in.
There are so many topics that _should_ be taught in public schools, but surely a course in “Identifying Logical Fallacies” (the informal kind) would benefit democracies more than almost any other potential field of study.

Palestine can end Israel’s “occupation” anytime it wants, by simply recognizing Israel has a right to exist, that Jews are people too, and by sitting down at a sincere table. They can end the deaths of thousands of Palestinians by simply not killing that one Israeli in a act of terrorism.
I have no sympathy for them, as they can end it anytime they want. But they dont want to, as their leadership is composed of Terrorists not statesmen or politicians, Terrorists who know they will lose power the day the conflict ends and thus want to perpetuated the killing indefinitely to keep that power to themselves, terrorists that dont give a rats-ass about their own people and constituents - just their own personal aggrandizement.

I disagree. Before I ever heard the term, I noticed that my neighbor and his sister would sit gape-mouthed while watching tv, and they were fucking stupid. Not for nothing, he’s a huge tea partier now.

I think that this is the breakthrough we were looking for. The nexus of agreement that **Bricker** and the liberals (except **DrDeth** ) can build upon to fashion a détente the likes of which have not been seen since Reagan and Gorbachev agreed that the Whopper truly is the king of burgers.

Some people have narrowed nasal passages that make it very difficult to breathe through the nose. It can be a born condition.

Once you add the word “potentially,” it is almost tautologically true.
The worship of Moloch – where children are sacrificed in fire – is one possible form of exposure to organized religion, and it is certainly more harmful to a kid than reading Oglaf.
